I'm glad to see that most "culprits" are those that lay claim to the "natural" label. My sister is a vet and she notes that the big name "mainstream" dog food brands (Iams, Science Diet, even those less expensive brands like Purina) all have extensive lab facilities and do serious testing of their products. She says this is not true of the brands that heavily advertise the "natural" aspect of their dog food. I take her at her word.

Dogs (coyotes, wolves) in the wild are omnivores. We currently have a coyote eating apricots and peaches from our fruit trees.

Huh. Thanks for the heads up -- good to know. I did a little more digging because we feed the lamb (sometimes chicken) and rice kibble by 4Health to our 4 dogs. The 4Health brand was on the FDA's list.

Ocho, my pibble (pit bull), had a skin condition that our vet suspected was from a food allergy. We changed to a lamb and rice kibble per the vet's recommendation, and Ocho's skin problem cleared up. (that's him in the pic)

The FDA reports make it clear the troublesome products are grain-free versions however, so I'm a bit less concerned about the product I'm using.

It looks like researchers don't really know at this point why the grain-free products are causing problems and the grain-based ones are not. More detail: https://www.fda.gov/animal-veterinar...cardiomyopathy

My girl is allergic to protein. Yup, you read that right - my apex predator Springer Spaniel is allergic to the very thing she is genetically programmed to catch and eat. Her food costs about a 100 bucks a month, is only available in one place and for reasons that no one is able to tell, needs a prescription for.

Not that it has much to do with the conversation but I feel the need to pitch a fit over it every time the subject comes up

Just make sure you research it a bit more, the sample size is super small considering the top 10 brands mentioned are used by thousands of pet owners and a large number of cases is tied to breeds that already have a history of health problems due to poor breeding (retrievers). While it's obviously something to consider, at this time there isn't enough information to justify a switch in brands, for me anyway. I use dogfoodadvisor and research anything my pets get, and they get the best food I can get at a reasonable price.

We have a few people much smarter than me on the genetics and science stuff in my breeds community that are doing their own research but so far have not found link between the foods listed and this particular health issue.

I never know from most media published reports of findings is if the study determined correlation or causation. Finding a correlation is a far cry from causation as demonstrated by the following chart:

Hills and Purina (and one of the heartworm manufacturers that I don't recall) fund the majority of Vet textbooks/schools... not thinking all tinfoil like, but it feels really odd that every vet in every state tries to push the same products according to various forums and facebook things I've been on through the years. Those brands all make decent products but there are alternatives

Well my Vet suggested I ween my dogs off of the Natural Balance Original Ultra “grain free” food and onto one that contains grains.
So I am currently switching them to Purina Pro Plan adult savor. It only has one ingredient, soybean meal, in the top ten ingredients that is allegedly bad. And a bonus. My older one, who is picky, loves it.

diamond naturals here. Get it at TSC Also anytime the dogs are sick or have stomach issues of any kind they get beef liver, raw egg, and pumpkin pure until it clears up and then about 3 days after. Works wonders.
