A lot more folks seem to be affected than I imagined. If you upgrade your CPAP, save the old one to see if it would replace the pit viper. I'll bet it could run a hot fire.

Thanks for the info Buck Flicks - I'll look into this portable unit when I have more notice before travel. I'm kinda stuck with the big old unit at the moment, since I am leaving at 4:30am tomorrow.

Yeah, I rarely need to nap any more. Usually it I had a late night followed by an early morning, or back when I was still working front line and had multiple overtime shifts in a row, I'd long for a nap on Saturday, just because I could. Also because my dogs rarely let me sleep in. But on the 3-4 times a year that I do feel the need, I have to plan carefully instead of just letting sleep take me like it used to.

My worst apnea episodes are while napping in a chair. Ironically, I no longer feel like taking a nap these days (much to the cat's chagrin), but thanks for sharing the review of your Resmed Air Mini, I'll check into it. Also, I picked up one of those SoClean machines and it makes sanitizing a breeze (no pun intended).

The CPAP would very likely help open up your sinus'. Your experience in the sleep study is pretty much the same as everyone else, it sucks. But, you fall asleep at some point and that's where they capture the data on apnea. It certainly takes some getting used to, but if you adopt the mindset of trading short term discomfort for long term gain (and health!!) it makes it a little easier. You have a lot to gain and very little to lose.

jfmorris I got the Resmed Air Mini last year for travel, and it was almost as much of a revelation as my first CPAP was. It's great for travel. It packs up into a medium sized shaving kit bag and takes up about 1/4 the space that my main CPAP does. It doesn't have a power brick or humidifier tank (drawback and benefit.) The unit itself is about the size of a soda can. There's no control panel on it - you download an app on your phone and control it via bluetooth if you want to tinker with the settings.
It easily fits in my carry-on backpack and if it's a weekend trip, I don't need a backpack. I can fit all my clothes and the CPAP in a small rolling carry-on.
It can be fitted with a special hose that connects to the face-piece and has a slot for a Humid-X disc, which retains the moisture from the air you exhale and humidifies the air coming in. It works as well or better than a humidifier tank. The discs are kind of expensive, but the cost was well worth it for the whole thing. The only problem was it wasn't covered by insurance (since it's not my primary rig) but again, the cost was worth it. There are several other travel-sized CPAPs, but the Resmed is the best-reviewed and I can't argue with it. It's been great. I also use it as the back-up CPAP if I sleep in the guest room when I'm sick. I also set it up in the living room if I feel like I want a couch nap while watching college football. That's the one drawback to becoming depending on my CPAP - taking a nap becomes a planned activity. I can't just snooze for 15 minutes if I'm feeling drowsy in the afternoon and just want the luxury of a nice nap. I have to either go to bed and strap in, or go get the travel CPAP and set it up in the living room. But... the backup does make a couch nap a possibility now.

I travel 3-4 times a year and it is annoying. I decided to bite the bullet and get a travel CPAP. The Resmed Air Mini is outstanding. I'll extoll its virtues in a different reply because the character limit will not allow me to do it justice in this comment....

My wife is in that obstinate refusal group. She has other issues which keep her awake and/or wake her up (shoulder and knee pain from surgery, PTSD from the Army) and she projects the frustration of that on her CPAP. She really needs to use it though, I wish I could convince her to wear it all the time.

That was one of my unexpected benefits as well, Cap. I used to get heartburn, or reflux, choking on bile, waking up terrified. That all went away night one with the CPAP. It's inconvenient, but well worth it. I can't sleep without it.
