Steve, one way of having your wife establish her dominance in the pack, in very gentle way, is for her to be the only food provider in the family. While I do give treats during training (all of of our dogs compete in agility and obedience trials), my wife is the sole provider of meals, and she requires them to work for that meal. They must do something on command such as sit, stand, or lay down before she presents the bowel. They learn very quickly that she decides if they eat, and that creates a bond where they want to please and obey her. Just a stern look from her will stop them in their tracks no matter what they are up to.

One memorial day weekend, my basset hound somehow got loose and I suspended cooking to track him down. After an hour of searching, I gave up. When I got home, he was just trotting gingerly back with a fully cooked 4 pound beef roast in his mouth. I have no idea which one of my neighbors was going to be bummed out.

Some time ago, our chihuahus were refusing to get off the porch to do their business. Probably because the weeds were taller than they were. Our vet told us to put some white vinegar and warm water in a spray bottle and spray down everywhere you didn't want them to pee. Seemed to work well. You'll have to refresh it every month or so.

Thanks. This sounds like an inexpensive solution if it works.

The action must be corrected whenever observed. And to train them you have to be with them; so for awhile, only let them out in the backyard when you can be with them, Fill a squirt bottle with water, set to direct stream. Whenever you see the unwanted activity, give a commanding NO and give them a squirt towards the face or ears.

Sometimes you can just use noise instead of the spray. Fill a metal can with some rocks and vigorously shake the can while giving the NO command.

If you don’t want to be outside with them, then you need a sound to startle them when in the act. You still need to constantly watch them, and give an immediate correction. A remotely triggered device to produce sound will be needed.

I wish your question had been about chewing because the answer is simple. Arrid Extra Dry spray deodorant. Works better than any ‘anti-chew’ bitter spray on the market. Good luck.
This is excellent advice. I have (2) rotties and first part is training the trainer, then training the dogs.

Agreed. I recently went through a training program with the 2 dogs. which helped tremendously. What I have done to this point is cordoned off the area until I can spend the time working with them. Until than there is a lot of other good advice here to help curd this problem.

It’s a lot easier to train the dogs than the owners. Dogs don’t second guess everything they are thinking.

I agree with most of the above. You need to catch them in the act if you intend on reacting . I suggest , watch them and when they do unwanted behavior maybe blow a air horn, or clap loudly etc, Now more important is to reward for good behavior. start by using a lead when letting them out. when they do their thing in an appropriate spot, highly praise and reward. So that for a few days. then off lead but still go out with them and reward. finally when they have EARNED it, allow them out on their own and have the run of the yard. But watch from afar.

Agreed. It does no good to correct them after the fact. They would have no idea why they are getting in trouble.
