    Who was/is he?

Probably 50 years ago I ran across what I have remembered as BBQ-ed beef that could not be beat. On the side of the highway down around Roseburg Texas was a rancher that pulled a pit out to the road in front of his home. He started 1/2 a beef on Friday evenings (as I remember him telling) and he started selling it Saturday morning. When it was gone, that was it until the next weekend.
I wonder if anyone knows who that was? Did his children follow in his footsteps? Are any of his family PIT members? Does anyone do that now, anywhere?

I can tell you all over the south people pull there smokers into shopping center parking lots and sell meat on weekends. From what I heard you'd better get there early if you want some. Now I don't think its a side of beef. More likely chicken n ribs.

It would be neat if you could find out. Unfortunately from my youth the only thing on the side of the road I remember is the famous Goat Man we use to see on occasion.

Well I live in Ft. Bend County, Richmond/Rosenberg is the county seat, I'm about 15 or so miles from said location and I have no idea who that could have been. But there are probably dozens of such characters around here, look at my tale about HJ Leggie down in Seabrook, Texas.

You wouldn't last 5 minutes around here trying to do that before the health department was climbing up your backside. I've had the health department show up at private parties I've cooked at asking people how much a plate to eat? After they get told several times it's a private party they leave.

Sixty years ago was an old man at Swinney Switch at Lake Mathis...so, heading back to San Antonio from Port Aransas, we'd pull in to Swinney Switch and a little hand painted
              sign
showed BBQ and a right turn arrow to go uphill on a one lane road. There he and sometimes his wife would be sitting in chairs just off the road beside his pit...a buck got you a pile of tender brisket, mop sauce if desired, and a beautiful braided round roll. After a week of near 24/7 at Port A, I'd eat that sandwich then fall asleep all the way home. Then the sign disappeared. Sad!

Them were the good old days. Are you able to console yourself now at Rudy's?

Yea a lot of things have changed in south Texas, sure ain't the good old days, kinda brings a tear to my eye. But then I wake up and realize there are more killer bbq joints then ever before within a stones throw. Plus I'll bet some of that old time cue wouldn't taste near as good as it did back then, time has a way of sweetening things.

Not to mention a leisurely stroll into my own backyard !!

Rudy's quit the annual freebie meal for the locals. Those times the BBQ would be exceptional! Then it would be their normal product again. So, I rarely eat Rudy's anymore. I make more BBQ than we can eat (I'd bet most of here do that!)...sealameal with a little mop sauce and freeze the leftovers...heat a snack in hot water anytime.

            the good one grill
The Good-One Open Range is dramatically different from a traditional offset smoker. By placing the heat source behind and under the smokebox instead of off to the side, Open Range produces even temperature from left to right, something almost impossible to achieve with a standard barrel shaped offset.
