First time for everything I guess...My smoker was in a hit and run!!

Was out at my sons house Friday night I was cooking for a post funeral gathering for his Mother in law who passed earlier in the week. Along about 9 that night my other son comes up to me and says Dad the cops are at your house! What?? Apparently some car came flying down our street (we live on a dead end road) and either couldn't stop or didn't realize it was a dead end. My Smoker was sitting out in front of the garage as I used it to cook briskets the day before for the party. My UTV was parked right next to it because I hauled a load of wood over to use.

Car slammed into my smoker and pushed it into my UTV and then wound up in the woods at the end of our road. The driver and or passengers fled the scene. The smoker inflicted more damage than it took. The mount for the on board propane tank is messed up and will need replacing. I think other than that it's alright.

I'm going to have to hook it up and tow it to make sure it still tracks straight but he hit it close to the front and pushed it. Had he hit it further back that smoker wasn't going to move much and it would have wound up in his lap and he would have been seriously injured or perhaps killed.

My UTV took most of the damage. They may total it. I had a hard cab on it and the right side door is sprung and I'm sure the entire cab is twisted. The cowling on the front will need replacing. It blew out the panels behind the front right wheel and ripped heater hoses out and you can look directly in the cab from the outside.

Insurance adjustor will be here Monday or Tuesday to asses the damage. The cops called me later and said they know who the car belongs to but they haven't located him yet. He said no need to rush home as the car already had been towed and to their knowledge nobody was hurt.

Turns out the kid who the car is registered to showed up at the cop station yesterday to report his car stolen Friday night! Oh really?? The cops know he's lying so they are reviewing traffic cams to try to put him in the car on Friday. Either way he's in some trouble.

My neighbor came home and seen the car in the woods still with the lights on so he called 911 and started taking pictures. So here are some pics of the damage and the car in the woods. I'm leaving everything just as I found it until the insurance guy checks it out. I'm guessing I'm the one and only guy who has ever had his smoker hit and run!!

He hit it hard enough all the doors flew open and some grates flew out.

    • Started Low-N-Slow BBQ in 2012. Obviously, it's taken hold (in chronological order:
1.) A pair of Weber Smokey Mountain 22.5's
      2.) #LilTex, a 22" Expensive Offset Smoker (looks like a Yoder Witicha)
3.) #WhoDat1, a HUGE Gravity Fed Insulated Cabinet Smoker (cooking chamber 3'x2'x6')
4.) A Full Size Commercial Dryer/converted to Vertical Smoker.
5.) Jambo Backyard stickburner (my FAVORITE Pit so far)
6.) GrillMeister, a huge 24"x48" Adjustable, Charcoal Grill from Pitmaker.com
      7.) 22" Weber Kettle with Slow-N-Sear
8.) Vault insulated reverse-flow cabinet smoker from Pitmaker
      9.) BarbecueFiretruck...under development
10.) 26 foot BBQ Vending Trailer equipped with HUGE Myron Mixon 72xc smoker is HERE, Oct 2016!
11.) Opened www.PaulsRibShackBarbecue.com Food Trailer officially in March 2017
12.) Austin Smoke Works 500 Gallon Propane Tank Offset Smoker, named "Lucille" as travel pit for PaulsRibShack, Oct 2018.
12.) Opening Brick & Mortar location at 4800 Nelson Rd, Spring 2019. Had a pair of 1,000 Gallon Austin Smoke Works pits, both in RibShackRed for our new place!

Fabulous Backlit Thermapens, several Maverick Remote Thermometers (don't use any remotes anymore), Thermoworks Smoke, Other Thermoworks toys, Vacuum sealer, lots and lots of equipment...

I'm loving using BBQ to make friends and build connections.
I have #theRibList where I keep a list of new and old friends and whenever I'm cooking, I make 1 to 20 extra and share the joy.

Dude, that stinks!!!! A healthy culture requires character. And if someone is missing that essential ingredient, than some good-ole accountability can help them catch up.

Nearly 3 years ago, someone rammed into the back of me at 1 am as I was hauling home a trailer-ful of barbecue pits from church. We'd cooked for the artists playing there that evening, the fantastic Matt Mauer (I'm wearing a T-Shirt from them today!). They guy fled the scene. I was hurt, muscles in my back, and it took me over 9 months to get back to full speed. They paid me ok for the damaged pits, but dinged me on my truck.

God provided on the accountability front, however, and the driver behind the guy followed him home when he fled the scene and came back, let the police know where he was. I'm assuming he was ticketed, but I don't know. The kid called me later to "apologize" and had the gaul to tell me he left because he thought he'd hit an animal. Makes me a wee bit angry just repeating it here.

Glad you're stuff is not to hurt, and here's insurance to make you whole.

OOOp's. Sorry about that, glad nobody was hurt.
From the sounds of things the smoker came off lightly, the sign of a well built unit given what happened.
The plus side is the meal had already been prepared.

Normally the smoker would have been with me. My son lives about 10 miles from us but he specifically requested I not bring it he wanted me to cook at home and reheat and bring it out there for serving. He didn't want me outside cooking all day while everyone was in the house visiting.

The Slow 'N' Sear turns your grill into a first class smoker and also creates an extremely hot sear zone you can use to create steakhouse steaks.

                            Pit Barrel Cooker Smoker

Why stink up the house deep frying and spatter all over? Do your fried chicken and calamari outside. Blackstone's Rangetop Combo With Deep Fryer does it all!
