    Freezer in the garage

Does anyone live in a hot climate have a deep freeze in the garage? How long can I expect a new one to last? How much will my electric bill increase per year? We don’t have a basement, so it has to go in the garage, on the patio, or in the bbq building that doesn’t exist yet. And when I say hot ....

I do have a freezer in the garage but I live in Minnesota. My garage is too cold, so I guess we are opposites here. But my advise would be to buy quality. If you do that, you should be fine. I think my bill went up about 60 bucks over the course of the year. If you buy a quality unit, make sure it in Energy Star rated to keep the cost down and efficiency up, you won't have much of an issue. The higher quality units are built to last for a long time.

And they generally do, but get a freezer alarm, preferably wi-fi.

How does that work? I’ve read that your freezer can’t be in too cold of an environment either.

Insulate the garage if you can, it will make it an all around nicer place to be.

We have a block house, and if I have to fir out the walls we’ll have to park a car outside. The ceiling is insulated though.

Ah, copy that. Once those blocks heat up it's tough to cool em down. I have a Bro that works for PFD and he says it is absolutely brutal to do the job down there in the summer.

I’m in Alabama where my garage is routinely 95 degrees in the summer heat. Right now I have two full upright refrigerators and two mini fridges (each holds 2 beer kegs) in the garage. They work fine, but my AC and pool pump overpower them on the electric bill, so I can’t say how much they use. I had a deep freeze out there for about 10 years, it died, then someone gave me a small one that I put in the house in the laundry room.

Randy - i live in Gilbert and moved into our house in 1986. It’s block with a 3 car garage. We’ve always had a freezer in the garage. First one died at about 12 years but it came with us and was about 7 when we moved in. Replacement has been going strong for the last 20 years. Didn’t do anything special. It’s on an interior wall. Holds 0 Fahrenheit all year. I can’t tell you about the electric bill as we’ve always had it.

        Best regards,

        Jim

Thanks everyone. I don’t think my wife will let me move the laundry to the garage so the freezer is not going there . I’m going to try to fit it in the garage. Once I figure out how, I’ll post a pic.

The Y bought me a chest freezer when we were dating. it still runs. gets frost on it, the seal needs to be replaced, but he puts a weight on the lid and it is still out there running. two things contribute to the life span. the original quality of the freezer (mine is a Kenmore) and how full you keep it. I have learned, long since to keep it full. sometimes keeping ti full isn't so much a matter of choice but just the way things go. when I first bought it, we kept it full but freezing gallons of water. that helps keep the freezer cold sot he compressor doesn't need to work too hard.

I got a 15 year old upright freezer from a friend 10 years ago, and it still runs great out in the garage. Didn't really notice an increase in the electric bill. I have to defrost it every couple of years, but that's about it. I think it is a Kenmore. And we are in east TN where it gets pretty hot.

Why stink up the house deep frying and spatter all over? Do your fried chicken and calamari outside. Blackstone's Rangetop Combo With Deep Fryer does it all!
