    Mt. Rushmore of BBQ

    This is something me and my friends do usually around a campfire while enjoying some adult beverages. Topics range from music to movies to mustaches. There are no right or wrong answers.

    Not sure if the instructions mean no more or less than the 4 names or meaning it has to have 4 names and the below is ok?

    2 famous people and my Dad and Step-dad. The latter could never compare to whatever famous folks I chose skill wise, but as a kid at my Dad's he was always grilling something and usually burning something else like biscuits in the oven (which oddly he now does on purpose during the holidays because it reminds him of his Mom doing the same thing). At my Mom's, my Step-dad grilled something quite often and it was ALWAYS preferred to Mom's meatloaf (which I hated until just a few years ago).

    I couldn't begin to guess who I would put as the famous people. I only heard of Meathead in the last 2 or 3 years. I'm well aware of Franklin and Mixon but never sampled any of their wares, though I have cooked a few of their recipes. Instead of a Chef I guess I'd pick George Stephen who gave millions of Americans and others world wide an affordable, quality path to good BBQ. The other would probably be Henry Ford who was the other piece to hyping the popularity and ease of BBQ with his creation of the Kingsford briquettes.

      My Mt. Rushmore would encompass the entire Rocky Mountain chain. Sorry but I could never choose just 4, it's like trying to choose your 4 best dishes or 4 most admired people or 4 of anything. I like your post but I just think there is too much engrained and interwoven history to barbecue to choose a pantheon of guys who would represent dozens of regional styles and ways of cooking amazing dishes. True there are those who rise above (Franklin) and the innovators (George Stephen) but even they borrowed from someone else's idea and improved upon it. Cooking good food is a progressive endeavour, a matter of choice and of taste, and is hard to subscribe to any 4 people, even as they have greatly contributed to the overall product.

      Anyway good post and very thought provoking. My list, unfortunately, is waaay too long to pick just 4.

        While I certainly could unnerstand usin my visage on a Scarecrow, or a Grotesque on a Gothic structure, Reckon I feel like its usage on any monument to anything would be a poor choice...

        Let's see.
        Mt. Rushmore is 3 all time greats, and one modern guy.
        Two of the all timers for me would be Arthur Bryant and George Stephens. I think the first one would be a set of black pit master portraits to take the George Washington slot, and represent the origin of the cooking in the Carolinas.
        Modern guy can be Meathead or Aaron Franklin or Myron Mixon or Shane Draper. The Teddy Roosevelt slot is always the most interesting debate.

        In defense of Arthur Bryant... the Calvin Trillin article about the burnt ends put BBQ into the popular culture of the north, midwest, and west coast. I'm not putting Trillin on a mountain, so it's Arthur Bryant.

        I was thinking about how to identify the caveman that first figured out how to keep or light fire.

        That thought led me to include a tip o' the prongs honor here to all the individuals in distant history that looked at something and were the first to think 'I wonder if you can eat that', and sadly found out for the benefit of the rest of us, 'nope'.
