    They are recalling Goldfish!

I just read that Ritz bits and Goldfish crackers are being recalled. That’s more than likely old news in your world, but it’s new to me. In the not too distant pasted we’ve recalled the meat, vegies, fruit, peanut butter, and now the crackers. What next the vanilla wafers? No more banana pudding! This could get serious.

All that was said to ask this. Why aren’t we irradiating more of the food supply. I worked for years in the NDT industry (nondestructive testing). We used gamma emitting radioactive sources to x ray lots of things in the oil and gas industry. It seams it would be very doable to construct a well shielded, underground, bay with a few properly placed cobalt 60 sources that could irradiate a trailer full of product in no time. It could be frozen, that wouldn’t make any difference. Gamma rays leave no residual radiation. The trailer and product would be sterile. I know I’m not even close to being the sharpest knife in the Amazingribs drawer. So I’m asking why?

It's not a blanket recall. To quote the manufacturer: "The affected flavors include: Flavor Blasted Xtra Cheddar, Flavor Blasted Sour Cream & Onion, Goldfish Baked with Whole Grain Xtra Cheddar, and Goldfish Mix Xtra Cheddar + Pretzel."

I never really cared about recalls, but I now have a pregnant wife and a 2 year old. Now, it does matter to me. I’m ultra careful now! I just pray it doesn’t happen to my wife or kid(s)!

The thermoworks instant read is a MUST for me to avoid food poisoning! The recalls still scare me though.

BTW. Handy tip. You can pasteurize eggs at 132F in a SV machine in about 3hrs. Then you can cook them as over easy as they like or in recipes etc. use a SV calculator to ensure the right time for your size eggs.

Polarbear777 thanks! We normally buy pasteurized eggs, but now that I think of it, I bought eggs today and didn’t even look! I have that back idea! Thanks for that!

HazMat handling at that scale for the profit margins for food would drive prices through the roof.

Irradiating food somehow got a bad name. A lot pf people won't buy irradiated food. When a Whole Foods opened in our area, we visited to see what all the hype was about. There is a nice restaurant inside, and they had a sign up stating that they irradiated their ground beef, so you could order it cooked any way you wanted. The last time I was in there, I didn't see the sign.

Yep. If they're not doing the back stroke, they're probably okay.

When someone manufacturers a certain ingredient and ships it to lots of other companies, there is potential for widespread recalls, from Honey Smacks to Gold Fish.

Too many fear mongers to use radiation and other industries would lose out. I wouldn't need a fridge for my milk.
