      Again, thanks all!

      LA Pork Butt,

It went like this. Gretta was always afraid of people, especially tall men. A buddy of mine from high school came to visit, and boldly stepped into her space, and she got very excited. So I went in close, and tried to calm her by rubbing her chest. She nipped me, and it broke the skin. As soon as she did it, you could tell she knew it was wrong.

So, I called the Doc to see whether I needed to do anything. He asks when was my last tetanus shot. I couldn't remember, but knew it was more than 10 years. C'mon in he says.

Once he had me there, he says it's been a while, so let's do a physical too, and lab tests, including a PSA test.

Results come back, and they're high. Off to the urologist, the biopsy, and eventually surgery and radiation. Given its stage, I wouldn't have made it another 18 months. He got the surgery done in the nick of time.

So, as far as I'm concerned, that dog saved my life, and she got plenty of steak and other goodies for it. And the cancer has been in remission for 11 years now.

EdF I'm glad you and Gretta had a good life together and it ended the best way possible. And though we know it is inevitable, it is always sad and they are missed. I hope soon you find another to bring the joy that only a dog can.

I know it's morning, but I just got off work. I'm going to open a couple of ales and invite you to join me and my dogs. However, if you aren't here in thirty minutes I'll be forced to drink yours as, well, we wouldn't want it to get warm and go flat.....

I've had a lot of different dogs in my life but the ones that were my favorites were always my labs. The story above reminds my of my last one, his name was Ivan. Ivan was a stray that I picked up and he immediately befriended me and my college room mate. We took him everywhere and he was fully trusted to just hang around if he wasn't invited into someone's home or whatever. Dog was like glue. Anyway we go to this new apartment complex to go party or do something and we leave Ivan in the truck bed to just hang out. Well after a couple of hours we leave and no Ivan. I mean I start to panic and spent the next couple of hours combing the neighborhood and asking anyone I saw if they saw this black lab. No go. Called the animal shelter the next day, no go. No Ivan, bye-bye buddy, heart broken.

OK long story short, 6 months go by. We for whatever reason go back to that same apartment complex to visit those same people. We go in for a couple of hours and come out and who do you think is in the bed of the pickup? Ivan !!! It's true, I swear, it was like time stood still and it never happened. You talk about an excited dog and excited people. We were all dancing the hoocie coocie that night !!!
