I am just your average backyard "pit master" and started about 2 years ago. Like most, I started with an electric Masterbuilt smoker/oven. I had no idea what I was getting into as far as BBQ goes. In my opinion that was definitely not a smoker, but I got to experiment with flavors and rubs. From there I wanted to learn more and every time I would "Google" questions about smoking this site came up. It always had the best and informative information for what I was looking for.
I then purchased a Blazin Gridiron Pellet smoker and it cooked great food but according to the judges (co-workers) the food did not have enough smoke flavor to it. I am in no way bad mouthing any particular smokers, just sharing my experiences with the ones that I have owned. The thing for me with the pellet smoker was that you just fill up the hopper, set the temp, and forget about it until it is done. Again, this was another learning experience and a way to experiment with different kinds of meat because I really had nothing to worry about. It was also extremely boring.
Part of the fun for me is watching the fire and smoke coming out of the stack. That thin blue smoke is a beautiful sight! I then purchased a Yoder off-set stick burner about a month and a half ago. So far, I love the results. I had to do several "test" runs with just the firebox to figure out the temp, wood, etc.. It has been a great learning experience and again I have referred to this site constantly for information. I have never not been able to find what I was looking for as far as answers to the questions I had.
My point is that this site has a ton of information and everyone should join the Pit Master Club to show your support. The yearly fee is minimal and will help this site carry on the good fight. The thing that drew me to the site was the professionalism, experience, and genuine caring of its members which is unlike any other. As I read through the questions asked, and the responses from members, there is never anything smart A$$ said and nobody is putting them down. The members truly care about helping others learn. To me this is a top notch group of people and my hat is off to Meathead and the other moderators who keep this site going. Please keep up the great work and thank you for helping this newbe get started in the great world of BBQ!!
