    How long did you lurk?

    I was reading another thread and it brought this question to mind. How long did you read the free part of the site before signing up as a Pit Member? I don't think it was too long for me, maybe a month or two at most. How about you?

    I used the site for more than a year probably... pit wasn't up and running yet... joined within the first year of the pit being up and running... drug my feet for a bit because I'm leery of paid memberships.... This is my first and only online paid membership that I have (hulu excluded). First day of membership I posted in the pit if I remember correctly.

          I think once I got my LSG off set smoker. That's about the same time I started looking for help,advice ect....

            It seems to me I was using the free end of things for 6 mos or more before I took the plunge. It's the only thing I pay for also.

                Wait a minute, am I reading you right? In your 10 days of a 30 day trial you've posted almost 250 times? I don't know it that's admirable, obsessive or what. Obviously you've got things to offer so I say when the 30 day trial is up, and your post count is at 750 or so, by all means sign up and become a regular member!

                Not obsessive ribeyeguy! I just keep a tab open to AR, and welcome as many new members as I see. The rest of my comments are just pleas for help, and gibberish. It's actually a 90-day free trial.

              I don't really know. I just found myself visiting more and more. I wasn't really interested in The Pit. I just figured I had spent enough time here that I ought to support the site. Once I joined, I started participating right away.

                I started using the public side of AR when I got my BGE for Christmas in 2011. So I lurked for a long, long time.😎 I joined the Pit on November 2014 as a way of saying thank you for the great content. I really looked at it as a contribution but... as it turns out I've learned more from Pit members than I did on the public site.👍 A serendipity thing I guess. I consider it the best $24 I've EVER spent in my BBQ hobby.😎

                  I started reading AR around the time I got my BGE as well, early 2012. When The Pit came on line, I was going to sign up right away, but I procrastinated because while I liked reading about how to bbq, I wasn't sure how much I wanted to talk about bbq. I think I waited about 4 or 5 months.

                  I'm signed up for two other paid forums, DKPittsburghsports and PiratesProspects. I've found that the discourse is more civil and more useful when the members have some skin in the game. Also, the forums don't seem to get dominated by posters who feel they own the discussion space. I don't know why that is, but I like it.

                  I was reading from AmazingRibs and experimenting and learning more and more, I was telling all my friends anytime the conversation was about food about this site and how awsome I think it is and I realized I was still seeing only the free part of the site. The decision then came easy. That all lasted about 3 months. I joined and expect to be hanging around here for a long time. Thank you all, Thanks Meathead.

                        Like Breadhead and Mosca, I was on the site when it was free for who knows how long. Initially, I thought that I would still have access to content (with adds) if I didn't pay. So I argued with my wife about paying and she said "buy me the I-pad Scrabble game first". Then the free content disappeared and so I had to join. It took me a long time to begin posting, though. I was too busy reading and experimenting with other folks' ideas. As a side note - we are still getting adds on the free Scrabble. Now that I recollect how I joined, I think I owe the wife a $0.99 I-Tunes Christmas present.
