My brother who lives in Columbia, Mo. called me last Thursday and asked me about pellet grills. Now keep in mind that he is so tight that bones pops when he moves . So I told him that I have the RecTec RT-680 and how I really like it. He then tells me that he didn't want to spend that much (imagine that). I also told him IF he decides to get whatever and since he has no experience smoking meat that he should consider on ordering Meathead's book. Today he called me and said that he order the RecTec 680 and Meathead 's book. Then he tells me to give a year and he will kick my ass at bbqing. We will see...

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.

Well DW, ya done good. Your bro will love ya, & unbeknownst to Rec-tec, they should be thankful. I do say you did better than me. Over the Last week end we went to visit my step-son in MN. He had a menu planned for 3 days. First day was venison, some good sized chunky steaks. We got to talking & l told him about reverse sear. His response was "ya whatever" & then l plopped down my thermo-pop, much to my astonished wife ( that is another story dealing with MCS), and gave it to him. He thanked me & put it into a drawer. Said he preferred the touch method, right over the heat.
Now all this is on a new Weber Genisis. Grilling is done & l thought good, but could have been better if he would'nt have killed the deer a second time. He did mention that he thought he over cooked the meat.
The next day rolls around & he has brats & burgers planned for more of the fam that was coming over. He then asked me if l would do the cooking. I said sure, he then plops down some Wally World 1/3lb burgers & some Johnsonville. I cooked them up using the thermo-pop on the burgers. He & the rest of the fam said it was the best burgers they ever had. Their bar is very low, but it is amazing what a little know how will produce.
All this time he only used the thermo-pop as a pointer for a hunting map that he repeatedly showed off. For three days l had to watch him use the temp gage as a pointer. It just drove me nuts.
The MCS part of the story is, it got me a new thermo-pen at the blessing of my wife, who thought it was so wonderful that l gave her son my prized thermo-pop.
It probably will only ever get used as a pointer, but alls well that ends well.Last edited by FireMan; September 10, 2016, 06:49 PM.

I know I make damn good BBQ cause my 3 dogs have NEVER said no to it. (OTOH, my 13yr old says no to just about everything, except my ribs.)
I tell my friends and co-workers about AR and try to steer them towards a reasonable rig. Others (usually guests of friends), I let them grovel at my feet after feasting them.
