    Any Bird Experts Out There?

This morning at work we had 2 hawks fly in to our warehouse through an open loading bay garage door. They've been here all day flying around the rafters and we've had no luck coaxing them out. Called our local animal control and DNR but they could offer no assistance. Anyone have any idea how to coax them back outside?

My guess would be to leave it open soon enough they would get hungry and have to leave. If they were already dead I could be of much more assistance.

A poultry rub should work. Seriously, have you got any way to generate smoke at one end? Hopefully the wind will cooperate and draw the smoke through the building.

Smoke 'em while they are still alive? Season them later?

Smoke 'em first - then they are easier to catch.

ribeyeguy, I would think 12 Mice and 2 Cotton Tails staked outside the Door will work, but someone will have to standby to close the door! Let Me know how it Works Out For You!

They came in for one of three reasons. First, they saw food (animals) go into your warehouse and followed. Second, they are younger birds and a more dominant bird was showing his/her disappointment in their squat on his/her territory. Third, they have only recently fledged and are out trying to find, and stake out, their own territory. But they are teenagers and we all know that teenagers are (or were) idiots, present company excepted.
They will both leave in their own good time regardless of the reason. Leave all of the doors open as long as you can during the business day. Eventually they will a) get hungry and leave or b) feel like the threat to their well-being is no longer watching and leave or c) they will fly around in circles inside the warehouse, finally blunder into an open door and leave.
Of course, that's just my opinion, I could be wrong.

Since we're having some fun with this, how about chasing them out with a remote control drone?

Best idea I've heard yet. We actually got them out though. We shut everything down an hour before closing, turned all the machinery and the lights off and left the bay door open. After about half an hour they flew out.

I do have to mention one suggestion that we got though. I called a local Audubon Society to see if they had any suggestions. The person that answered the phone sounded like a sweet, elderly lady. After explaining what was happening and hearing her say "Oh My" numerous times her suggestion was to go to a pet store and buy two mice and two parakeets. Once we got them back to the plant she said to snap their necks and set them outside the bay door. She said that they wouldn't die instantly and if they twitched around a bit the hawks would swoop down, snatch them up and take off with them.

Real nice, glad I didn't go that route.

That old lady knows her stuff... worked at Walmart in hs and college and our old maintenance lady would just snap the necks of birds we caught in the store like it was nothing.....

that would have been my suggestion, too. offering them prey. after that, I would have suggested what you did. make the warehouse quiet and dark. like insects, they'll go for light.

Hopefully PETA isn't reading this advice from the elderly woman at Audubon. Lol.

(Joke). PETA would never be here. Unless of course it's the People Eating Tasty Animals PETA.

This is why we don't let the cats out unsupervised and only on the porch. We have hawks, osprey, eagles. The way they swoop down and pull fish from the creeik is amazing though.

Glad you got your birds out... I worked at Wal-Mart while in high school and college... I have all kinds of stories about animals getting in the store... My favorite though involved a deer walking through the front doors about 7 a.m. one morning... the video was hilarious because the people greeter just waved at it like "welcome to wal-mart".... ended up the thing got caught in our electrical room and dang near killed itself... finally made a tunnel out of pallets going out a receiving door and was able to finally escape but it looked like a violent crime scene out of horror movie before it was done.... needlessly to say we had more than 1 employee offer to "hunt" it in our store if we would let them lol...

If it happens again, might want ya try taking stuffed animal or a rag and tie a string to it and pull it out the bay doors while your hiding somewhere. (I could just see ya running around the shop with a rag chasing you). If ya do that please post a video.

That would have been fun to tie a cat toy mouse on the end of a fishing pole. Standing outside and reeling it across the warehouse and out the door.
