Is MSC trying to get me to upgrade to 10 by holding one of my processors hostage?

My desktop running W7 has been running slow as hell. Its an old DC and I have a svchost pegging out one side for the last few days. I have downloaded the anti-malware and it didnt find anything. CCleaner didnt find anything, and I cant kill the svchost that is hogging half of my CPU. Why is MSC running crap on a system they claim they dont support?

We are Borg. Resistance is futile. You will be assimilated.

You are probably right. I just finished upgrading 35 computers at work. One of them had this problem for three days before I got around to working on it. I have to say the upgrades went very well and everyone is happy to be on Windows 10. There were a couple of programs that had to have a minor tweak, but now run just fine.

I check the task manager, and on the svchost processes that are sucking up resources, right click and select "Go to service(s)". this will bring up the service associated with that resource hog. Thank your lucky stars that it's not a rootkit... you may just need to reboot something, or simply shut it down. It's not always a virus that is at fault... svchost is a feature that loads DLL's for other app's to use.

I did a reboot and it came up the same way. I checked it this morning and it had done a W7 update. I have been having problems with the wifi repeater in the shop. It must have been a big download and/or slow download speed

One of the most likely culprits, sadly, is Windows Update. I've monitored what it does, and for some crazy reason it can spend hours or days hogging the CPU, while doing very little disk or internet access. It's broken, and the fixes are not easy to find.

Try stopping the Windows Update service and see if that solves your CPU issue. If it does, you know what the problem is. If that doesn't solve it, keep stopping services until you see the CPU settle down. At least then you have something to look into, and a reboot will put the services back the way they should be.

If it turns out to be Windows Update, let me know and I can tell you what I've used to fix it.

When I first saw this, I was thinking someone else is in trouble due to More Cooker Syndrome, MCS. Than, when I read the info & saw all the initials I realized it was something else, MSC. Oh. As Emily Latila would say, never mind.

You might want to try it. It'll still be free till July 29, and if you hate it you can revert to 7 IF you do it within 30 days. If you do try it make sure you give all the applications you use regularly a good work out before you decide to keep it. Also, like most MS "upgrades" it comes with a lot of crap you never wanted and you'll have to delete or disable.

That said I've never looked back. It's a good stable platform and will continue to be supported. I run a couple of really old Adobe Products that supposedly had "know compatability issues" with 7 and I've never had a problem.

The MacBook Pro I'm typing this on, however is stuck one version back because the current version absolutely won't permit my virtual machine installation of Windows 10 to access the USB ports. Good luck.

I have 10 on a crappy little acer just for checking emails, FB and stuff like this. The network stuff isnt as user friendly as 7.
My shop stuff is a lowdough mix and match of obsolete stuff I use for recording live music that may or may not be compatible. I did an online update from vista to 7 and really need to do a wipe, but then I cant install 10. The 7 update was a pig and is hogging 75% of my HD. If 10 keeps the old set up, I may be maxed out. Most of my flies are on external drives. It might be time to quit being a tight wad and fork over the money for new equipment. I can buy a real nice smoker for what that would cost.

If you have a Weber Kettle, you need the Slow 'N' Sear

The Good-One Is A Superb Grill And A Superb Smoker All In One

                    the good one grill
The Good-One Open Range is dramatically different from a traditional offset smoker. By placing the heat source behind and under the smokebox instead of off to the side, Open Range produces even temperature from left to right, something almost impossible to achieve with a standard barrel shaped offset.
