    OTG or Performer?

No ability/capability issue here as it's the same grill on the OTG 22.5 and the Performer Silver, but does anyone have a Performer Silver? I'm trying to decide if it's worth the $80 over the OTG ($229 to $149), to have the small fold down shelf, the lid holder, and the small wire rack underneath.

I figure the rack probably won't get used at all. A shelf or table always comes in handy when I'm grilling/smoking, and it's nice to have it integrated, but . . . . And I can't figure out even from playing with them a little at HD whether the hook on the inside of the OTG really works to rest the lid on the grill or whether the lid would need somewhere to sit when the grill's open.

At least I've (pretty much) decided that the Performer Gold isn't worth yet another $70 for the removable timer, the integrated charcoal bin and the thermoset "table." I use my iPhone and can buy a cheaper garbage can.

I'm assuming the built-in thermometers on the Performers are as useless as most?

I'm adding this to my GOSM propane smoker and an old Charmglow gas grill that will be put out to pasture after this season due to internal rusting. I'm going to use the OTG/Performer for both grilling and with a Smokenator. I'll replace the gas grill next summer when I'll hopefully have more money (or have won something sweet from the Club )

I have the one touch silver, so I can't say for sure how I would use each, but for what it's worth the lid hook works just fine for me (should be the same as the OTG). I could always use a table, but I often do several butts so I don't think that table is big enough for me. I do wish I would have ponied up for the gold for the integrated bin, it gets windy where my stuff is set and it isn't uncommon to have the dust flying around; and since the vents are operated in the same way you use to dump the ashes it dumps a little every time I adjust the vents. As for the thermometer I know you can get good ones to put in there, but I would probably just use the hole to put in my probes, as they currently go through the lid vents which can be a pain.
All said, I should have gone gold, these things last a long time so while it isn't instantly worth the extra money, I would imagine over the years I will be using it that it would certainly add up.

I would think if you know you'll want the table vs the standalone OTG, go for the performer. Since you're asking you're obviously considering the table. You can't say having that little table there to set your tongs on or your hamburger-fetching plate wouldn't be handy. Like John indicates, the price adjustment may not be instantly worth it, perhaps a bit of sticker shock, but over the many years you own it you'll probably NEVER say "I should've got one w/o the table."

I went for the Performer specifically for the table. Incredibly handy. I didn't think much about the rack but ended up using it to store things like a whisk brush, cast iron skillet and charcoal baskets. It came in handier than I thought. And I use the charcoal bin as well. Well worth it.

I ignore the thermometer. I have a Maverick and tend to use that but I've used a regular oven thermometer on the grate as well. I peek through the exhaust with a flashlight when needed.

I've got the performer silver, and will echo the previous statements about the table and wire basket. I store an extra charcoal grate I use for searing, my chimney, a few bricks, and a couple other odds and ends down there. The table is also always handy, I wish there was even more room. The drawbacks I've experienced are that the three "hooks" that come installed on the performer are too wide to accommodate many grill tools' hanging loops, I tied some leather hoops to mine to get them to fit. Also, the storage rack for the lid is a bit of an annoyance sometimes. Whereas the OTG or OTS's have the hook in the lid to hang it out of the way, the storage rack for the performer lid leaves 2/3 of the lid sticking up to the side of the grill, which sometimes blocks access to food you're trying to flip or replenishing coals, etc. I more often than not just set the lid on my patio table to get it out of the way. So, in summary...the table and basket are very handy, the hooks and lid storage are not, IMHO.

Thanks gentlemen! I hadn't thought about pulling the thermometer and using that as access for my Maverick 732 probes. Not being overly mechanical, I was a bit worried that I'd screw something up big while drilling a hole for them.

I was thinking that the copper OTG would look nice, but Firecraft (which is actually based in my town) won't have them again this season (I guess most of these wimpy yankees don't grill/smoke during the winter), but he does have a Performer Silver in stock.

Now if he only carried the Smokenator . . . . guess I'll only grill on the Performer this weekend, everything else will go into the GOSM until I get that shipped to me.

The Good-One Is A Superb Grill And A Superb Smoker All In One

                the good one grill

The Good-One Open Range is a charcoal grill with an offset smoke chamber attached. It is dramatically different from a traditional offset smoker. The grill sits low in front and doubles as a firebox for the smoke chamber which is spliced on above and behind so it can work like a horizontal offset smoker only better. By placing the heat source behind and under the smokebox instead of off to the side, Open Range produces even temperature from left to right, something almost impossible to achieve with a standard barrel shaped offset.

Why stink up the house deep frying and spatter all over? Do your fried chicken and calamari outside. Blackstone's Rangetop Combo With Deep Fryer does it all. Plus it has a built in cutting board, garbage bag holder, and paper towel holder. An additional work table on the left side provides plenty of counter space.

                Professional Steakhouse Knife Set

                masterbuilt gas smoker

Our founder, Meathead, wanted the same steak knives used by steakhouses such as Peter Luger, Smith & Wollensky, Morton's, Kobe Club, Palm, and many others. So he located the manufacturer and had them stamp our name on some. They boast pointed, temper-ground, serrated, high-carbon stainless-steel, half-tang blades with excellent cutting edge ability. The beefy hardwood handle provides a comfortable grip secured by three hefty rivets. He has machine washed his more than 100 times. They have never rusted and they stay shiny without polishing. Please note that we do not make, sell, or distribute these knives, they just engrave them with our name.
