Central TX BBQ trip: suggestions welcome

My best friend and I flew out to Austin for the F1 race last year, we arrived on Thursday and left early the following Monday. Thursday PM we drove up to Taylor for lunch at Louis Mueller's, an eating experience I'll never forget. I ordered a brisket sandwich since Jeff ordered brisket, ribs and sausage and I knew I could munch off his plate. Friday night we ate at Perry's, I had a steak and Jeff had their 3-bone chop. Great restaurant, don't pass it up if you go to Austin.

We didn't make it to any other notable BBQ joints during the trip since we had to be at the track early, there was some decent Q at the track but nothing to write home about. We did make the pilgrimage over to the Salt Lick after the race but there was a 3+ hour line and we'd spent a couple hours in traffic clearing the track and driving over so we passed and ended up at a catfish house 1/2 mile from our motel..... Pretty good catfish, though.

Now we're planning a long weekend in January or February when my workload is down, the plan is to fly into Austin early on a Thursday and fly out either late Sunday or early Monday. That gives us lunch and dinner for 4 days, eight meals total.

I have to go back to Taylor, Franklin's is a given as is the Salt Lick and Kreuz down in Lockhart is definitely on the list. We'll probably want at least one steak night as well for relief. So that's 4 out of 8 meals accounted for and I'm looking for suggestions(or a reason to stretch the trip another day).

Any ideas, especially from the Texans on the board?

    TIA,
    Bill

Black's in Lockhart is good, too, and has a lot of interesting memorabilia on the walls. It's been a while since I was in Lockhart (which I call the left turn capital of the world), but I seem to recall that there is a wider selection of sides at Black's than at Kreuz. I haven't been to Smitty's, also in Lockhart, but I'm told that the food is better at Kreuz. The Kreuz building is newer, so it lacks some of the charm of older places, but the meat is great. I won't go into the Kreuz vs. Smitty's saga now.

Down the road from Lockhart is Luling, home of City Market, also one of the top BBQ joints in Texas. There's another place nearby, which I have not tried, but be sure you get to City Market. If you keep your eyes peeled, you might see some vintage cars, particularly Model A Fords, cruising around. There are a lot of antique car buffs in Luling.

    Ah-ooo-gah,

    George

Thanks, George. Black's and City Market are now on the agenda since we'll be close.

I'm thinking we might need to buy a cooler and some dry ice to ship leftovers back home.

check out Micklethwait Craft meats. It's a trailer, probably the best BBQ in Austin. Yeah yeah yeah I know about Franklin's but this is the place. Get the beef short ribs.

For brisket, you need to go to Stiles Switch Barbecue On North Lamar. Be sure to order a side of the dill potato salad, it's outstanding.

For atmosphere, try the Cele Store outside of Pflugerville. They're only open Thursday night, Friday lunch and dinner, and Saturday lunch. Its and old five and dime, with merchandise on the shelves from the 50s. It's also where they filmed the Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Make a reservation, especially if a band is playing, and bring cash (they don't take credit cards).

Good to know about Stiles. We just moved our daughter to Austin and visited several of the "obvious" big-name places, but her apartment is really close to Stiles. Next trip!

Howdy! I live in Kyle (between Austin & San Marcos). I see you have a list..if you haven't filled your list....go to Hut's Hamburgers at 807 W 6th. Get the buffalo burger.
There's a great steak place there also called Hoffbrau Steak House @ 613 W 6th.

The Good-One Is A Superb Grill And A Superb Smoker All In One

          the good one grill
The Good-One Open Range is dramatically different from a traditional offset smoker. By placing the heat source behind and under the smokebox instead of off to the side, Open Range produces even temperature from left to right, something almost impossible to achieve with a standard barrel shaped offset.
