    Private Messages (PMs)

Sometimes a member might want to contact you privately or you might want to contact someone privately. For this we have Private Messages also called PMs.

How to open and view a PM from another member:

From inside your Message Center, PMs received (if any) will show at the top of your list, in what’s called the Inbox Preview, signified by a blue background. You’ll see who the message is from, the message subject in bold red font, and the first line of that message. To view more of the message, you may click the red SEE MORE text, but you cannot reply to it from here, this is merely a preview pane. To access this message and reply to it click the red, bold subject text of the message to access it fully in your Inbox. From here you can reply.

Messages received and sent by you will show up here in a conversation string, in a similar fashion to regular forum messages in The Pit. At any time within your Message Center you may access past (old) PMs received by clicking "Inbox" in the left sidebar. Once a message is deleted, it will no longer show up in the Inbox folder.

How to send a PM (private message) to another member:

Private messaging works very similar to standard email, except that it only works within The Pit. You must log in to The Pit to view PMs sent to you and to send PMs to other Pit members. To send a PM to another member you can use one of two methods:

    1. Click that member’s name. Then from their profile page, click the grey Private Message button. Enter a subject in the Enter subject box (required), and your message in the Write something box. To send this message, click the red Post button (just like posting in The Pit). The user will be notified that they have a message, and this message will show up in your "Sent Items" folder in the options in the left sidebar.

    Or,

    2. Access your Message Center page by clicking the Messages tab in the very top red menu bar in the top-right of your screen, up near your username. (Here is where you’ll be alerted to any new messages you may have in your Message Center by a red number if there are messages waiting for you attention...see above).

In the first box beneath the words New Message, enter your message recipient(s). You must type the member’s username exactly as it is in the system. For instance, "Pit Boss" is different from "Pitboss", and these may be two different people. Be sure to type the member whom you’re trying to reach exactly as their username is in the system. As you begin typing, you may see a pop-up box with names similar to what you’re typing. The more you type, the narrow and more specific these pop-up results become. You may select a name from the pop-up or finish typing it. Hit Enter to finalize the recipient. Once the system accepts the recipient, their username will have a blue x next to it. This means you have entered the member’s username correctly and the message will be sent to this person. The x can be clicked to remove this recipient. You may enter multiple recipients to a single PM, in the same way you would a regular email system. Please note however, there is no BCC option in The Pit’s PM system. All recipients can see the other recipients to a message.

Enter a subject in the "Enter subject" box (required), and your message in the Write something box. To send this message, click the red Post button. The user will be notified that they have a message, and this message will show up in your Sent Items folder in the options in the left sidebar.
