Looks like a nice rig for $1,000! Congrats on the purchase/find! I, like most others, am awaiting the pictures of that bad boy in action.

Thanks for all the responses and well wishes. I couldn't wait to fire up this cooker and see what it can do. I was excited and a little disappointed. I suspected the airflow to the fire box was insufficient. So would get a great fire going with clean smoke from oak wood and soon as I close the fire box, it would smolder and smoke like crazy. I was really happy with the smoke and heat distribution inside the chamber, there is great potential here. Also, I feel like the cooking chamber needs a drain for when I need to wash it out. Since I am out of money, I am getting a buddy to just cut large rectangular holes on the side of the fire box. One day I will put doors on them.

For this first cook, I had the big meats on about 4-5 hours then I put them on the pellet cooker so I could go to bed.

So I smoked some pork shoulder steaks till the internal temps were about 110, then seared them on my Weber Kettle. The people I cooked for loved them. I was really happy with the tenderness but I tasted the flaw in the smoke.

I love this journey as a BBQ Cook! Click image for larger version

I'm curious. Can you post some pics of the firebox?

Here are some pics of the firebox and opening. I also may need to change the heat and smoke deliver from the fire box to the cooking chamber one day. However right away, I am going to cut out the dampers so that I can get more airflow to keep the fire going.
