    Costco

IMHO you cannot beat Costco for consistent quality at a good price. I especially like their prime beef. Like any market, you should go through all the meat and pick the cuts with the best marbling (especially if you buy choice grade beef).

Yes, but I got a membership through a charity. Where there is a will, there is a way. Just be a little creative. From there website:

*Restaurant Depot is wholesale only. To qualify for a free membership account, on your first visit you need to show a valid reseller's permit (business license) or tax-exempt certificate (for a non-profit organization) and show proof that you are authorized to purchase for said business or organization.

I just showed them the tax certificate from the charity (I was the president of the local chapter at the time) and got it in five minutes.

Can you gents copy these comments to a new review thread? Ideally we'll have a separate review thread for every Retailer/Supermarket.

I should add that my brother in Tucson got a membership with his BBQ team business card.

I also like costco the quality/price combo is hard to beat; a local (skilled) butcher will have better quality but the price will be much higher. I find the costco meats to be superior in quality to the other chain grocery stores.

Exactly. The quality might be a little higher, but it's not worth the price difference.

Agreed, my only complaint is that they don't stock beef short ribs!! I have to drive 30 minutes just to get a rack

Based on the pics you've posted I think you're doing the 30 minute short rib drive justice

I have to make it count. LOL

Count me in the Costco fan group. Brisket is the only issue - sometimes they have none & often only flats (that aren't, of course, cryovac'd). And I've occasionally been able to find a brisket cheaper at a local meat market, but when I do it's usually a 12+ whole packer. The steaks I posted the other night were Costco prime and a comparatively good price. Now that I've finally got my FoodSaver opened, I'm going to buy a whole rib eye from Costco, which is $2/lb less than buying their precut steaks, and carve it up myself.

I've had pretty good luck as far as consistency and price at Costco, but I generally hit Cash N Carry for my meat. Not sure if it's just a local place for me, but prices, selection, and quality are usually better. Just last weekend I got St Louis cut ribs for $1.89 a pound.

I'm with you on Cash & Carry, better selection and prices than Costco. The Chairmans Reserve (Tyson) SL ribs have always been attractively priced, and they had Angus full briskets a couple of weeks ago for $3.29. The mini-brisket I got at Costco a few weeks before was over $6/lb.

I don't have them where I live. I have Sam's club and Meijer. Should I move?

Yes. Yes you should. The last two houses I bought I checked to make sure they were close to a Costco. That's how much I like it.

When I moved from CA to PA and in with my GF, I was completely bummed that the closest Costco was 20 miles a way. Lo and behold, a year in and they built a new one 5 miles away. They stock a little differently based on the local demographics, but it's still Costco.

150% on board with Costco for meat. Can't beat the price on St. Louis. They sometimes have really ridiculous specials on rib-eyes too. I've walked away with 4 ridiculous 1.5-2 inch thick cuts for obscenely low prices.

I haven't been too disappointed with the selection at my local Sam's. Costco is about 25 miles away, so I don't get there often.

I am a member at Sam's and I asked the butcher there if they had tri tips. He had no clue what a tri tip was.

Oh yeah - they really aren't "butchers" in my opinion. Not surprised at the lack of knowledge about the tri tip. I've asked at the meat counter of both my local grocery stores and neither of those "butchers" knew what a tri tip was either. Chances are they only know about the cuts that the company sends them. Still haven't had a chance to go to the local farmer's market - they have some stands occupied by 'real' butcher shops. Would be interested to see if they speak tri tip or not.

Costco usually carries a couple of different cuts of tri-tip in cryovac bags. I know one is marinated, I can't remember if both brands are though.
