Thanks for the warm welcome, folks. With all the recommendations I now feel compelled to mention all the equipment I already have: a Slow n Sear original, ThermoPro TP-17 dual-probe thermometer, and the Unknown BBQ lid hinge.
The instructions that came with the hinge and the two YouTube videos I watched said the installation was a 15-minute job. I want whatever tools they were using! It took me over an hour of drilling over two nights in my garage just to make six little holes. I didn't appreciate how thick a Weber Kettle is until I tried to drill holes through it. In retrospect I probably should have worn some hearing protection, but hey, I can't get tinnitus if I already have it.
Half the gifts on my Christmas list were grill-related - a pair of grilling gloves, a TP-15 instant read thermometer, and Meathead the book. I got all of them.
Anyway, I'm enjoying the heck out of this rabbit hole into which I've fallen.
