    Mark Garetz (mgaretz) here

    Hi Everyone,

I'm in Northern California (San Ramon, in the East Bay of SF). I love to cook all manner of things. I also occasionally play bluegrass rhythm guitar and I'm a computer geek from way back. Been on and moderating forums back before the internet when all we had was dial-up and 300 baud modems were the fastest we had. At one point I was deep into beer brewing - owned one of the first on line homebrew shops and eventually a microbrewery. Sold both a long while ago. The homebrew store still exists, the brewery didn't make it, despite taking several prestigious awards including gold/silver/bronze medals at the Great American Beer festival and Best of Show at the California State Fair. Hardly drink any beer at all now!

My retirement job is travelling around the country as an embroidery, sewing and quilting educator. Some months, especially the summer, I'm home a lot. Others I'm on the road 3-4 weeks a month.

When I'm home I do all the cooking. I love to create recipes. I have a not-often-updated cooking blog at www.markiscooking.com that has a few of them.

I own a Weber Genesis gas grill with GrillGrates that primarily gets used for reverse searing and a Smoke Hollow vertical propane smoker that I never use any more. A little over a year ago my wife got me a Traeger Jr pellet grill, which I immediately upgraded with an Ortech controller. After using it for a year, I finally got tired of the small pellet hopper and constantly having to babysit the temperature (despite it being sold as a set-it and forget-it grill), so I bought a Rec Tec, primarily based on recommendations of this site. Couldn't be happier!

I've posted a lot of my cooks over in the comments in the regular section of this site.

Mark welcome! We look forward to seeing some of those cooks now posted in the recipe section where members will be able to search for them and view them as needed. Please take a few moments, if you haven't already, to read my welcome letter as well as the tip on how to fill out your signature, then kick back and relax for a spell

A big part of this site is our unbiased equipment and product reviews. We love playing with toys and we have no problem calling them the way we see them. Some companies pay a finder’s fee if a reader clicks a link on AmazingRibs.com and buys a product. It has zero impact on our reviews, zero impact on the price you pay, and the sites never tell us what you bought, but it has a major impact on our ability to keep this site alive! Masterbuilt MPS 340/G ThermoTemp XL Propane Smoker

This is the first propane smoker with a thermostat, making this baby foolproof. Set ThermoTemp’s dial from 175° to 350°F and the thermostat inside will adjust the burner just like an indoor kitchen oven. All you need to do is add wood to the tray above the burner to start smokin’.

Finally, A Great Portable Pellet Smoker

        Green Mountain Grills Trek smoker

        Green Mountain Grills Trek smoker

Green Mountain’s portable Trek Smoker is one mean tailgating and picnic machine. But it’s also gaining popularity with people who want to add a small, set it and forget it pellet smoker to their backyard arsenal. And with their WiFi capabilities you can control and monitor Trek from your smart phone or laptop.

Grilla Pellet Smoker proves good things come in small packages

We always liked Grilla. The small 31.5″ x 29.5″ footprint makes it ideal for use where BBQ space is limited, as on a condo patio.

Blackstone Rangetop Combo: Griddle And Deep Fryer In One

The flat top does the burgers and the fryer does the fries. Use the griddle for bacon, eggs, grilled cheese, and so much more. And why deep fry indoors when you can avoid the smell and mess by doing it outside!

The Pit Barrel Cooker May Be Too Easy

The PBC has a rabid cult following for good reason. It is absolutely positively without a doubt the best bargain on a smoker in the world. Period. This baby will cook circles around the cheap offset sideways barrel smokers because temperature control is so much easier.
