Just bought my first pellet smoker and can't wait to learn a lot from this group. Any particular accessories you recommend for a newbie?

Welcome to The Pit! Happy to have you with us, thank you for your support. Congrats on the new cooker. If you haven't' already, I'd suggest you pick yourself up a good remote thermometer. There are a couple tried & true ones, the Maverick ET 732 or the ThermoWorks Smoke. They both remotely display 2 temps- meat & cooker, or 2 meats. The Fireboard is a pricier one but will remotely display 6 temps. Also a good instant-read will be useful.

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.

Welcome from the land of the kilt pin and claymore!
I have a pellet smoker! Which one you got (mines a GMG JB)?
Couple of tips off the top of my head.....
1. My own experience is that you don't get quite as good a bark with the pellet smoker compared to my other charcoal smokers so I tend to take larger cuts of meat a little further into the stall before crutching to help encourage a better bark (I use a water pan too because I read somewhere that it helps with smoke adhesion)
2. Insulate your smoker, most pellet smokers have accessories like thermal covers these are great at regulating temperature in cold weather and the real bonus is that it cuts down on your pellet consumption!
3. I always hoover my grill before every Cook especially the firepot. This helps avoid excessive Ash contaminating your cooks and helps avoid issues with auger feed into the fire pot.
4. Definitely worth doing heat distribution checks on your smoker,, especially if it has a movable heat shield, on my gmg it's not straightforward to get it positioned perfectly so I use some metal tape to indicate dead Centre on my grill / firepot and allow quick positioning and adjustment, remembering that sometimes you do want to have hotter or colder sides. As a rule of thumb especially on gmg devices if you're hot on the right side slide the heat shield to the right slightly and vice versa for the left.
5. My best tip there is a wealth of knowledge on the pit from guys and girls far more experienced than me so be sure and search the forums when you hit a stumbling block I guarantee you you'll find the answer or at least someone will help send us some pics of your first smoke!
