Wood Chunks for gas smk'r

JimLinebarger My wood tray is stainless steel and the chunks used I have cut from the split, so they do have 2 flat sides. They seem to burn okay, I was just curious as to size of chunk and the difference it makes.

Using big chunks can be a problem if they do not have a flat side. I have a cast iron smoke box and if the wood has too many points it smokes for a while then goes out because the char blocks the heat. When I have chunks like that I add chips or shreds to it to help it burn completely. It does go quickly so I ended up refilling many times during a smoke.

So there isn't really a more suitable size. I've been cutting them about 2 inch x 1 inch. Must give chips a try. We don't get pellets that I'm aware of.

I use everything from chips, and pellets, to chunks the size of my fist. all work well.
