lots of probes.
Fireboard
All you need is two pieces of heave gauge wire. Bend one end of each wire into a "V", and the other end into a "L". Slide the V into the slot between the grate wires, turn 90*, and lift the grate out.
Almost forgot - welcome to The Pit.

SmokeyGator , I have one and they're super useful. I love it, but I just got a generic brand one and it works great. $12 on amazon, just search grate lifter.

Certainly better than the Primo lifter I got, which really is no better than pliers. Plus I can use pliers for lots of other things. I’m strongly considering the BGE lifters, both for the grill grates and ceramic plates. I can use my welding gloves to lift the plates, but I have 5-7 seconds MAX before I risk a serious burn. A lifting tool would be much safer.

I'm not exactly sure how the grate is laid out in the Summit, but take a look at the PBC sidebar right next to my post here>>>>>>>>
I use Vise Grip pliers to drop in the charcoal basket and also pull it out when I'm done to dump the ashes in a steel pail. They're never close to the heat long enough to affect them.

This is the nicest grate lifter I've ever used. I can lift and hand a fully loaded grate with one hand. Very sturdy and very well made.

I use one of these guys left over from my Craycort cast iron grate for my WSCGC. Like you, you are probably using your grate in the lower position at times, and then have the need to bring it up to the next level to sear. I have the same needs. There are probably better tools, but this does good with a hot grate.
