The upright will hold 50 racks of St Luis cut ribs
But getting enough heat from the firebox to the upright isn’t easy
So the idea is to separate the two chambers
With a drop in divider and a added exhaust exit

Gotcha. That makes sense. I suppose that's easier than adding another firebox just for the upright.
