Will burning primarily wood in a charcoal grill hurt the grill

I've seen numerous references made to grills needing to be built hardy enough to withstand stick burning or how repeated stick burning in a charcoal grill led to repairs or grill breakdowns. I was wondering why this would be the case. does a wood fire burn hotter than charcoal? Is there something about the release / burning of VOCs that has some kind of corrosive impact? I totally get that the design of a charcoal grill may be suboptimal for wood (the need to frequently access and move the fuel around, potential airflow issues etc) but was just wondering if i am risking junking my grill if i give it a shot.

I will at times make a fire in my chimney starter with nothing more than blocks of oak or other woods. I pour those into the bottom of my Weber kettle and use the fire for direct grilling. Never an issue.

Smoldering Flea it's fine as long as you aren't using it as a fire pit and stoking up a bonfire. Not sure what kind of cooker you are working with but most should be just fine handling it so long as you keep the temps in the cooking range.

I have added splits to lit charcoal to raise the temp when cooking pizza. No problems for me either.

My sister has the $49 walkabout grill she got from Lowe's and I was setting it up for indirect heat with charcoal and wood. I placed the chimney contents along the inside side and that caused the red paint on the outside to immediately bubble and then burn. I am in agreement with the above comments but wanted to share the only time I've seen charcoal/wood doing any permanent damage to a cooker. That particular cooker is suitable for indirect cooking, but not if you're worried about the paint job :-)

            $49 says it all.

TripleB exactly. It's still a functional grill, but it's not pretty.
