First, I'd like to thank everyone over the thousands of years that thought 'I wonder if you can eat that?', and found out for all of us that you can't.
As to your question - other than bland neutral woods, like oak ( I hope no one disagrees ), if any wood made a great smoking profile, or even an 'I'd do that again next week' smoking fuel, we'd all know about it already. It would be a de facto standard. If it ain't, it's assuredly a don't.
