    Have you ever seen this?......

I was prepping my sns to sear some steaks. When I opened a bag of Weber charcoal that I’ve been storing for about a year (Lowe’s had a sale and bought several bags) I found the charcoal was molded together and was covered in a white coating. I first thought that it was mold but it was stored in a plastic bin in their plastic bag. When I touched it it felt like and acted like a deflated balloon over the charcoal. I threw the bag out but has anyone experienced this?

I’ve had bags that have been around for some 6-8-10 months and have never seen something like that.

I think you did the right thing by tossing that bag.
who knows what that was and what it could have done had you cooked with it. 😬

Never and I have charcoal sitting through the winter. I stock up when Costco has the end of the year sale (much to my wife's chagrin). Never had that experience. Like you, I would have tossed it.

Haven't seen it yet, and I've been storing some bags for nearly a year. Sounds creepy. Good call to give it a toss.

That sounds pretty weird. Never experienced it myself but probably the right move to toss it

I've never seen anything like that.

I'm using Weber charcoal I bought in December 2018 on clearance, and its been stored in an old garden shed with a roof that is starting to leak in a couple spots (just not over my charcoal!), and I've just tarped the roof until winter is over and I can rebuild the shed. I just opened a bag of the Weber charcoal that had a tear in it, and it was still perfectly dry despite the storage in a humid outdoor Alabama environment in a leaky shed for more than a year.

I'm also still using Kingsford charcoal that I purchased in summer 2018, from the same shed, and its in the normal paper bags, and no mold or weird stuff in those either.

I store piles of bags outside year 'round, covered in a couple tarps, I've never experienced what you describe. I like the idea of white chocolate dipped though. Too bad you didn't get a pic before tossing.

I have been using the Weber briqs. They claim no additives. I have an open bag in the hopper under my kettle and it has been there for many months, not mold. I wonder if it had been water damaged, perhaps in a flood zone? Perhaps that is why it was on sale?

If you threw it out it's too late now, but if you had sent a pic to Weber they might have replaced it.

Thanks, guys! I am surprised nobody had the same experience. Wish I would have taken a picture. Maybe next time.

I buy a year's worth at a time and I have never seen this. Good idea to toss it. Which reminds me, I am down to one bag and there are no current sales in my area !

I know ! I blew it last year and missed the Labor Day sales events. Now I will be paying for it until the Memorial Day sales start.

I have been watching "The Expanse" on Amazon Prime.....What you describe seems to be the "Proto Molocule". You should have incinerated it. Our planet is now doomed.

Probably mold. I saw that in a stray bag I’d forgotten in the back of my garage years ago. I threw them away.
