2014 -- My KCBS Competition Year -- First Quarter

I started the 2014 with the goal of cooking 20 KCBS contests! Goal was achieved on October 4th in Sheridan, Arkansas. Here's a brief review of the places BBQr's Delight has cooked this year.

March 8th: Smokin on the Square, Pensacola, FL. This is a really fun event! Only about 40 teams (there's only so much room on the square!) and absolutely beautiful trophies, this year hand carved pelicans out of cherry wood. Seems like the trophy maker was a bit upset that last year's RGC picked his trophy up with one hand and hoisted it over his head in a victory salute! Maybe someday I'll get one. I've never done well at this contest. I adore the organizer, it's for a great charity, sometimes there are bag pipers and did I mention Joe Patti's World Famous Seafood Market? I always go home with great seafood! Results: 41 out of 46 teams, 38 in chicken, 35 in ribs, 31 in pork and 43 in brisket.

March 15th and 16th: Smokin' at the Run, Miami, OK. This is My-am-A not that city down in Florida! I don't know why. Hosted by Buffalo Run Casino, this event was one of a kind. On Saturday, teams divided up either Red or Blue and there was a shootout to see which side did better. I was on the Blue side (which beat the Reds resoundingly). Results: 35 out of 41 teams, 39 chicken, 27 ribs, 2 in pork and 37 brisket. Glad to get that pork call!

On Sunday, 72 teams cooked again (or tried to cook). The weather went north fast. Straight line winds blowing sleet, snow and rain made for miserable cooking weather. Discovered a hole in my pellet hopper which was wetting the pellets down putting the fire out. Then the power went out. Miserable cook, miserable results! Results were 64 out of 72 teams, chicken was 43, ribs 69, pork 31, brisket 69.

March 22, Smokin' BBQ Challenge, Hammond, LA. I've been to this contest every year except for the first year (wasn't cooking then). I go there to eat! Tope La restaurant feeds the cooks and the judges on Friday night and breakfast on Saturday morning. There are so many great places to eat! From Cate Street Seafood (for sushi) to Benny's Place across from the contest site, there's more great places than time to enjoy! Eating well helped my cooking! Results: 31 out of 61 teams, 19 in chicken, 49 in ribs, 31 in pork and 69 in brisket. Can't wait til 2015!
