    Komodo Kamado Big Bad 32

I stumble across this video the other day and I thought I should share it with The Pit and maybe get the MCS juices flowing. Yeah, I know...you don't have to say it, I hear it from wife all the time about how I am sh**head, er, instigator. Enjoy!

As long as I personally would NEVER have to move it. LOL

But I move too often to even contemplate something like that. (That was one of the selling points for the WSCGC.)

But.........they come in a reusable crate with a ramp. It would be easy for you (as long as it's you and not me. )

So there is a guy who got a SBBKK recently and did great unboxing and burn in videos on youtube.

My MCS is acting up watching them. . .

You know you can rationalize anything, right?

Let’s pick something normal: the 32”. So you’re into it for $7200. Add $600 freight, we’ll add a couple shelves @$190 each… figure $8500, maybe a custom rib rack or something rounds it up.

Folks live a lot longer these days. If you’re 35 (I don’t know you, I’m just picking a number), let’s figure you have 45 more years. 8500/45/365… and all of a sudden it’s only going to cost you FIFTY ONE CENTS A DAY to own that son of a smokin’ gun! For the rest of your life! Hell, that’s less than Netflix!

Plus, every day you make it past 80, it becomes even MORE of a bargain! Aw, screw it. You know what, I’m getting two of them.

From your avatar pic, I’m guessing 29. So, even two should be a bargain…plus if you have two kids, it’s only fair that each get one in 51+ years.

MsTwiggy Kidding aside, that rationale is actually why I don’t have one. At 67, I can’t justify the cost for something that won’t "pay me back" before I am unable to use it any more.

Mosca One flaw in your logic is assuming that the KK does not get significantly broken during all that time. I've get 4 kids between ages 2 and 6, and they destroy everything in sight. Even if I could get my wife to approve it, having an $8500 cooker would scare the crap out of me for that very reason.

They are so pretty. I just enjoy looking at them. Like looking at a Jag XKE .

For the weight and ease of use, though, I'm glad I have the WSCGC.

I looked up these cookers for the first time. Geez. Pricey!! As Mosca says, you can almost cost justify one if you’re young enough. I’m 66 and way too old unless I win the lottery.

Even then, now is when you start thinking about getting rid of stuff. And, things that I might have wanted to attempt cooking when I was younger, now I just think, "Screw the fancy appetizers, I’ll just put on some ribs around noon, and make a salad." Back then I was a lot more adventurous. It’s like cars: I spent my whole life around cars, and I’ve had some great ones. But now I want a mid sized, mid priced SUV with comfort and good gas mileage, and decent leg room.

If you think Komodo's are pricey go look at a Kalamazoo gas grill.

These have intrigued me for some time, but fall into the "I'd really like one for how well built they are, but............................" category because they are expensive. Even if they may be worth every penny asked because of that quality build. I've spent, cumulatively, much more on the collection of cookers I have, but there's adventure and variety in having and using that group of hardware. Which is to say, that many choices can't make sense from a practical point of view. The closest I come to joining the Kamodo Kamado ranks is watching Marketplace ads to see what "could" be if I were really tempted at a more modest outlay.

In the past three months there have been three opportunities within our region, a 32" and two 23". One of the 23s the seller started at $3500 ask and gradually move his price down. This one was in San Antonio which isn't all that far away, but not super easy close. It finally sold a few days ago when his ask got down to $1450. The other 23 is the newest version, so better features than the other and it's about 45 miles away. The seller started at $4000 a couple months ago and worked his way down to $3000 on the ask within a couple weeks and has sat there, stubbornly, since. It's still available. Compared to the acquisition price of a comparable new one, which aren't immediately available still, it would seem a steal. The resale market on these, regardless of their quality, isn't real strong. During this time, and in the same geo area, there are probably a couple hundred (at least) "normal" BGE, Kamado Joe, and all the rest of the also rans, for resale in the $500-2500 range, so a reluctant buyer field is understandable. The one that hurt/surprised was the 32" that posted up almost 3 months ago in Austin, for the opening ask of $3000.................it sold within 2 days...........somebody found some real value for that level of kamado customer.

I could have had an older 32” for $1800. I would have had to drive to Boston (4ish hours) and figured out a way to get it into and out of a borrowed truck, plus up a flight of stairs onto my deck. And it needed some tiles replaced, but it came with the tiles and a repair kit. But it was more that I liked the idea of having one more than I wanted one.
