I think it is to add fuel. A word of caution - it will break if dropped. Mine is only about 60% of the round filler now.

I have one and I never thought about it until now, my guess is to add fuel or wood to the fire. I like mine but I have never had to add fuel or wood during a cook.

Just joking. Don't know. The Weber has one hole like that. I think for cast iron plate or pot.
