2 zone on a Smokey Joe

    Experimental Wednesday:
So I had a bunch of 'fresh' mushrooms that weren't so fresh any more. Not inedible, but certainly not to be consumed raw.
I know! I'll use them to stuff some boneless, rolled chicken thighs!
    And I did..
Hyvee (my local grocer) currently has their Bare (naked) chicken thighs on sale, with a 5¢ per gallon deal on your gas card. So, I bought a package, boned them out, and put the chopped up mushrooms in them and rolled the up and tied them. Meathead has details of boning and rolling chicken thighs on the site. - Search.
Now comes the experimental part. I have never tried to cook 2 zone on a Smokey Joe. But I always burn chicken on the outside and leave it raw on the inside when I try to grill it direct. So, I took a Walmart® disposable loaf pan and filled it with water. I put it on the fire grate of the Joe and filled the area behind it with hot coals. (hint, 3/4 chimney was more than I needed.) Then, I put the chicken rollups over the water pan and let them go until the internal temp reached 165°F, (Used my trusty thermopop instant read digital thermometer, but it was about 24 minutes.)
Experiment was a success. Chicken is gone, Mushrooms are gone, and I can cook 2 zone on the Joe.

Cool! I love the little Joe. I tend to use only a dozen coals in warm weather, 14 or 16 in cold weather. I light about half of them and the other half are unlit, works perfect.

Good to know, I'm still planning on what cooker to take tailgating this year, the Smokey Joe is up there.

Good info, I use Smokey as a "side burner" for my BGE. Did you snap a photo?

Sorry, no photo. When I grill, I tend to use most of a Weber chimney full, with about a dozen new brickettes and the rest used and saved. This was my first time with 2 zone, and I had about 3/4th chimney, and it was overkill. Next time, 1/2 chimney with a dozen fresh bricks and the rest used.

Thinking I'll buy a cheap aluminium loaf pan to replace the disposable. For 88 cents at WM, no reason not to cut down on waste.
