I just came across this design, with a kit from US Stove. The oven kit is ~ $ 60.00. The dual drum kit is ~ 40.00. In St Louis, an as new food-grade 55 G drum is no more than $ 25.00. Amazon has the kits - just look up 'barrel stove kit'.
This looks like a great way to build a high-capacity smoker setup starting with ~ $ 150.00. I can see the final product being $ 250.00 - $ 300.00 - grates, the upper drum door, high-temp gaskets, temp gauges, an all-weather flue, an easy-empty second bottom ash door, etc. The sky is the limit, really - I LIKE the opportunities here.
I never knew this approach existed! It sure looks like fun, and heavy casters would be a necessity. Has anyone taken a shot at this? I'd love to see 'lessons learned' posts. I suppose I'm worried about a big temp variation in the upper 'reverse flow' (sort of) drum.
