The PK comes apart! The capsule can be stored in a closet. Buy him a camp Chef Mesa aluminum table to go with it and it will fit in a corner. He will be the coolest kid around and he won't be able to wreck it if he tried!

Weber Q 1000 with stand. Small and portable. Easy to use. Great for tailgating or bringing to the beach or camp.

If they are into grilling Weber 22' with a Slow and Sear and Vortex.

Jumbo Joe is a great portable grill and would work well for tailgating or picnics. With a slowNsear it could keep quick cooking foods coming for a group and is capable of doing some low and slow stuff.

Most cities have fire codes that don't allow open flame outdoor cooking appliances to operate within 10 feet of a multi-unit dwelling unless they are cooking on a patio/balcony that has a fire sprinkler system with a sprinkler head on the overhang, and some don't even allow you to store them on your patio/balcony. Colleges usually have much more stringent fire codes where dorms are concerned and may not even allow such a device to be stored in a dorm, even if it's not being used. Electric grills, however, are a different story. Also, they suck as cooking devices.

I missed the poll but agree with some that said a portable gasser. Mostly because so many places he might live likely won’t allow charcoal.
