I usually make an Old Fashion like this, roughly:

3 cubs of ice in a tumbler
    Pour Bourbon over ice
    Enjoy and repeat as necessary

It's very tasty and usually enjoyed next to the grill or smoker. In all seriousness, I do enjoy a real Old Fashion now and then.

99% of the time that's also my old fashioned recipe now as well except hold the ice. I was always more of a Manhattan drinker than old fashioned drinker. They're a little less sweet. But whisky of some sort neat is what I usually reach for these days.

    Is it sweet or sour?

This post got me thinking of an Old fashioned but since it is like 15 degrees out, I needed something a bit heartier. Enter the Black Walnut Old Fashioned.

      A bar spoon of sugar,
6 dashes of black walnut bitters
      a splash of water
      3 oz of rye
      one big round ice cube

      Just what I needed.

My wife just got me some of the Black Walnut bitters. Very tasty. I also have Fee Brothers Old Fashion Aromatic bitters.

Yeah the black walnut is great.

Here’s one with a different twist:

2 oz bacon-infused bourbon (I used Four Roses Yellow Label)
      1-2 barspoons hickory syrup
      3-5 dashes angostura bitters
      garnish with orange peel

ColonialDawg has it the same way I serve an Old Fashioned. No fruit cocktail for me. Just bourbon, bitters, sprinkle of sugar, ice and an orange or lemon peel. And if you want to get fancy, rub a bit of bourbon on the rind and light the rind with a match, set in glass and serve.
