    South Island NZ BBQ??

Does anyone have any recommendations for South Island New Zealand BBQ joints?

Are there any there? A quick Google search will tell you. Otherwise the locals just usually go out hunting for something.

Hi there, sorry missed this post. I'm not sure of any good American style BBQ joints, but there are plenty of places that do an amazing steak. As for ribs, the Woodstock Hotel in Hokitika is my pick of the crop.

I actually remember seeing on the news recently that a chef had sold his chain of restaurants and was taking some 'chill time' by setting up a trailer offset in the CBD and selling batches of ribs, brisket etc as essentially a street food setup. But I can't remember his name or the name of the business

Auckland is top of the North Island, not South Island

Good timing BlackrazorNZ! Thanks for the tip. We go thru Hokitika, so will try to time the visit with a meal. I’ll also watch for an opportunity in the CBD - in Auckland, I presume. We have a long layover in Auckland, so it might work well ... if we can find the guy. Otherwise, nice dinner place in Auckland you’d recommend?

obiQsmoker in Auckland, Morepork BBQ (https://www.moreporkbbq.com/) is good. If you are travelling through Hamilton, I'd also visit Texas Pete's (http://www.texaspetes.co.nz/) - both are run by active competitors in the local BBQ competition scene.

Outside of BBQ, Auckland is full of good eateries. If you like Asian food styles (Chinese / Korean / Vietnamese / Cambodian / North Indian / South Indian / etc) you'll have no worries. If you like meat I also recommend Wildfire (https://www.wildfirerestaurant.co.nz/) which is a Brazilian churrascaria on the waterfront - although some free advice, it's all you can eat so they try and load you up with carbs and salads before the meat comes out, so if you're a meat man, go easy on the sides! Their pork sausages are heavenly.

Also for some non-food related tips - in the South Island there are a bunch of places that are not on the 'tourist trails' but honestly give a better representation of 'real NZ' than the carefully crafted routes Tourism NZ likes to spruik.

I'd definitely add any/all of the following to your visit list if you have time : Moana / Lake Brunner (https://goo.gl/maps/RL1RHQPtkEo), the Buller Gorge (https://goo.gl/maps/9NH5ta3hHPq), the Westport-Greymouth Coast Road (worth hiring a decent car for, one of the best drives in the country, https://goo.gl/maps/fQo8U5jdwAM2), Lake Kaniere (https://goo.gl/maps/VRnGSGciMdF2), Okarito (https://goo.gl/maps/vyQUxk83sRz), the Roxburgh Road (https://goo.gl/maps/r4U14ToVj4E2), the Rakaia Gorge (https://goo.gl/maps/q9fG9BwK9CM2), the Abel Tasman National Park Walk (https://goo.gl/maps/ctYv98to4sw) and a boat trip or stay somewhere in Pelorus Sound (https://goo.gl/maps/VsLzgjzNga22).

Also, most visitors to the West Coast and other wetter areas of NZ are usually vastly unprepared for the sandflys. These are like tiny mosquitos, except they hunt in huge swarmss, want to suck your veins dry, and will mercilessly harass you anywhere where water is unless you're prepared. Pack lots of long sleeve tops and long pants, and bring industrial quantities of DEET.

Haha. I love your inclusion of the sandflies in action! At least I assume that is what is covering your feet... the rest of the pictures are quite breathtaking!
