There is still one place where you can get your money’s worth. Cooks Fish Barn is located halfway between Rising Star Texas and Comanche Texas. It’s all the catfish, hush puppies, French fries, salad, and unlimited ice tea refills you want for $15.00 per person. Now it’s not new, It’s been open since the late 1930’s. It’s very reminiscent of an old south Texas bbq joint. There’s seating for at least 50 people. The food is very good. The catch is they’re only open on Friday and Saturday nights.

Hopefully, the catch is Friday and Saturday morning, with them being open on Friday and Saturday nights! ;-)

I'll have to check them out next time I'm out west.

PM me before you do. They’re only 18 miles from my house. I would enjoy meeting you there.

And to add insult to injury, even as little as we eat out, I've noticed table signs popping up advising "we're adding 18% to the cost of your meal to assure your server, the kitchen staff, and the busboys can earn an acceptable wage" or words to that effect. I paid reluctantly in both cases and told the manager we would not return. It's my decision to determine whether and how much to tip, not his.

So, my last bitch.. Colorado passed legislation banning the plastic grocery bags with a one year phase out. During the year, stores can still use them, but are required to charge 10cents a bag. Some stores, Wal-mart, just did away with them because the fine for not following the law is $10,000 per incident. This didn't really bother me as we have long ago switched over to reusable bags. However, on our latest trip to Colorado Springs for our every other week shopping we discovered Wal-mart changed out their registers so that YOU now are required to bag your own groceries, and they will not do it. I am guessing they have to cut corners somewhere to cover the $4.5 Billion they paid for the Broncos..

Here in Broken Arrow Walmarts have 10-12 self check-outs OR you can go to an old style register with their clerk doing the check out AND bagging. Your choice.

I'm not going to check out and bag my groceries because I did that in a grocery store for 2 years in high school for $.75 to $1.10 per hour!

I'll be darned if I'm going to do it again for free!

I'm one of those, apparently in the minority, people that prefer self checkout. I don't understand others' disdain for bagging their own groceries.

Huskee Having to self-check out and bag your groceries is sort of like eating in a restaurant and having to cook and serve yourself, then bussing and cleaning your table.

I disagree with that, to me that is not a reasonable comparison. I self checkout with 3, 5, maybe 10 things. Takes me maybe 60 seconds and I don't have to make awkward small talk with a cashier about what I'm buying. To each their own.

THAT is the way to do it. I think my eldest son is finally wrapping his head around the concept. His younger brother figured it out years ago. Not sure what the difference was.

That said, I’m probably one of the worst people to ask about price increases and the like. LOL Once all of the essentials are covered, everything else is pretty much fair game. And I’m completely guilty of either not looking or not caring. I mean, depending on the place/item, I might have a rough idea but I don’t dwell on it…nor have I changed plans because of it.

I’m slowly moving in that direction, old habits are hard to break 😁

Economy causes food prices to skyrocket → politicians pass "living wage laws" → restaurants raise prices in an attempt to cover the cost of all the rules and regulations → customers stop coming because prices are too high → restaurants forced to close due to lack of income → workers loose job and now have a guaranteed zero income.

      Lather, rinse, repeat.

Except..... that didn't happen in Seattle. You all can live in your fantasy where a decent wage caused all the restaurants to close, but that hasn't been the reality here and we were one of the first to move to $15.

One key was that we phased the increase in so restaurants were not hit with 2x labor costs all at once, forcing a big price hike all at once. And, well, if I have to pay a little more to ensure that people aren't on food stamps, that's fine.

Unfortunately Seattle restaurants too have had a difficult time trying to make it. Truly a very challenging time for the industry.

I'll just add, being a cattle farmer, that those high beef prices are terrible and not profit reflected on us. Our profit is actually very small and smaller than it used to be . We take good care of our animals all 300 , and feed them according to weather conditions but giving them 25 - 30 lbs a day during the cold seasons is normal. Our registered seed stock bulls get even more. Crushed corn was $7 a bushel last month , Other commodities are crazy priced also. Fertilizer and diesel has continued to go up so that effects everything people and animals eat. Someone somewhere is making a profit , but the Mom and Pop places are being hit hard so I feel bad for them.

I think this thread is coming very close to becoming pretty political in nature and may be shut down. So before it does, let me add my couple pennies.

Awhile back, say maybe 50 years or so, I remember my uncles having a remarkably similar conversation. Everything cost more, cars were unaffordable, how are we going to afford food, hell in a hand basket.

Youngsters didn't want to work, mostly incompetent and lazy. Including, and maybe directed towards, me since I was in earshot.

      Yet here we are.

Maybe my glasses are way too rose colored, but I think we will be ok.

here is a better article citing the timing differences of going to an express lane vs a regular checkout lane. Extrapolate from this that a full cart at a self checkout line will take forever vs going to a clerk-based line. Self checkouts were never designed for full cart shopping

[following up from here] All other things being equal, which lane is the fastest? This problem has obsessed me for years. It’s my DaVinci code. It’s my love for math, for mathematical r…

and while slightly dated, it also says that paying with cash should be faster than paying with a credit card (technology has come a long way since the article was written, but we can see some circumstances where cash does win the race.

I’m honestly surprised that restaurant prices aren’t higher. Over the last couple years my grocery bill more than doubled. My bi-weekly trip to Costco went from $100-150 to $250-300…for the same stuff!

That restaurants in my area have only raised prices ~20% baffles me.

Some stay in the middle so that they don't have to mark up much when things get a little high. A buddy of mine from high school runs a restaurant and they keep their prices in the middle, if the meat prices drop they make a little more money, if the meat prices go up they make a little less money, but they just keep it there until things get really tight.
