    Salvage BBQ Portland Maine

Visited Salvage BBQ in Portland Maine, based on a rave review by Andrew Zimmern. Interesting old building, with high ceilings, picnic table seating, a long bar and huge windows. Mild, smoky aroma greets you on entering.

Kitchen filled with standard gas and electric smokers. No big wood pile outside. We ordered St Louis Ribs and a BBQ brisket sandwich. Ribs were actually baby back, reasonably moist, but clearly reheated and tasted like a Ball Park Frank. The brisket arrived on an excellent roll with crisp sweet pickles and an ok cole slaw. The meat was truly dreadful- sliced cold and thin like deli meat, reheated, gray and soggy. Old pot roast.

Maybe they served Andrew fresh food hot from the wood smoker built when they first got started. But for us, this was a non-starter.

Ouch. I love southern Maine and will now avoid this place if I'm seeking a BBQ fix. Hopefully there are other options.
