Fernandina Beach FL has become our family's favorite vacation spot. Yesterday we ate at a terrific little BBQ joint--The Happy Tomato. Located on 3rd St in downtown Fernandina, it is a small place with great outdoor courtyard seating. Only open for lunch they serve ribs, pulled pork, chicken, and pulled turkey. They smoke their meats daily on a large smoker in the back. Darrell is the pit master and uses oak.
We we each had pulled pork. $7 for approx 1/2 lb of pulled pork and one side. The pulled pork was excellent. Perfect smoke, tender, and moist. Only minor complaint is there wasn't any bark mixed in. We had potato salad and slaw as sides. Both were very good. They are generous with the pickles--looked like a side of potato chips there were so many. Three sauces available--sweet, spicy, and mustard. We tried the sweet and the spicy. Both were good but we really didn't need them because the pork was so good.
I saw fresh racks of ribs come off the smoker and they looked and smelled great.
They also have have a full menu of other deli sandwiches and salads for the non believers in your group.
This will be a new must stop place on future vacations.
