    Ice cream lovers

    Last night my wife and daughter finished all the ice cream in the house. Left nothing for me.
    My daughter ended up ordering Dairy Queen from Uber Eats to shut up my belly aching for not getting any ice cream.
    Which leads me to tonight subject, home town dairies and ice cream parlors.
    Most Dairy now a days is produced by huge conglomerates in giant plants, milk trucked in and finished dairy trucked out.
    Most of us will remember the home town dairy, even the smallest towns had there own dairy producing everything for sale locally.
    And many had there own dairy bars/parlors serving hard and soft ice cream, so ignoring Dairy Queen and Baskin n Robbins who are your favorite small home town dairies, dairy bars/parlors.

    For me.
    Marla Mae in London - haven't been there in years but remember it like it was yesterday and I'm drooling
    Avondale Dairy in Niagara on the Lake - hard and soft ice cream right out of the dairy, long lines to prove how good it is
    Kawartha Dairy in Minden - up in pkadare stomping grounds, been years but fantastic ice cream, available in stores expensive but worth every cent IMHO
    Stoney Creek Dairy in Stoney Creek - long since closed but had a 50's style dairy bar and the ice cream was to die for, hard and soft right out of the dairy. You can still find they're ice cream in stores but mass produced now
    Toms dairy Freeze in Etobicoke - Sasparilla extra thick shake, OMG my temples used hurt from sucking on the straw, one of the best
    Reid's Dairy in Mississauga - it was an outlet for the Dairy that was in Belleville, home of the $1 milkshake, I did almost 7 bucks worth one day....nuff said....

    Time for a little nostalgia....

    We're pretty lucky, in walking distance I have a little cash only ice cream place... I always wondered how they stayed in business, but they musta done good... the "diner" on the corner of the "shopping center" they are attached to has changed hands 3 times in the 10 years I've lived here, and now this year the ice cream place bought it and knocked down the wall between the two... they take cards now and serve really great comfort food.

    Growing up Baskin Robins was the only ice cream choice. Never really got into the coldstone or other chain stuff as an adult. Where my wife grew up in VERY small town South Dakota there was a dairy bar, but world events finally killed it this year.

    The only ice cream I've gotten excited about as an adult were the gellato shops in Rome.

    We are lucky to have Dumser’s https://dumsersdairyland.com Been in business since the 1930’s and fantastic ice cream and shakes. The other is Island Creamery, base in Chincoteague, but with a shop in our town too.

      Drumsers reminds of a place I forgot, Dairee Delight in Brantford....no wonder mosta my clothes don't fit. Too small.

        Let’s see … there was me … standing out in the sweltering Alabama heat turning the crank on the old ice cream maker for hours. Ah, the good old days …

          With Grandpa supervising the speed of your cranking.

        Of course, there's the homemade that my Dad used to make, but he's been gone almost 30 years now, but a local gelati place opened last year, and it's only about 10 min from our house. That's our occasional go to now - not very often because it's also not healthy, but SWMBO does love it, so I get it more often than I get a burger...

        Almost forgot - it's called Gelati Celesti.


          Just a slight clarification here; Kawartha Dairy has a store in Minden, however, it is headquartered, and produces its ice cream, where I live, in Bobcaygeon, eh! 🍦🍨😎

            I know Minden was a store but wasn't sure where the main dairy was, I thought it was in Lindsay.
            Great ice cream none the less, kinda expensive for the girls I date....

            DaveD, I worked as a vendor on the Microsoft courseware team for about 10 years as a subject matter expert and spent a lot of time with copy editors. One picks things up. 😎

            smokin fool - yet another reason to get your ass up here. Perhaps we should plan an Ontario meat up for next year, assuming that the pandemic is no longer raging. I could host it here, but that would mean we'd be cooking as there are no good BBQ places up here, though I may be able to find one in P'boro.

          Ice cream will cool down your mouth and throat after eating really hot peppers.
          The next day sitting on the Throne, "Come on Ice Cream, Come on Ice Cream !!"

          There's a little farm market a half mile from my house that does homemade peach and strawberry ice cream, as they're in season. Might the best ice cream ever.

          On an odd note - I had black pepper ice cream at a restaurant who fancied itself a bit snootier than it deserved. It was good ice cream, but the contrast of spicy pepper and icy desert was weirdly tasty. The rosemary blasted shortbread wasn't so good. bbqLuv, fortunately no repercussions later...


            Haven't had a fresh dairy nearby for many years. We do get our dairy delivered weekly from a local outfit, South Mountain Creamery, and their quality is outstanding. Comes in glass bottles for deposit and everythang, just like the old days. They do have ice cream available typically one week per month, and it is outstanding!

            But the best ice cream parlor I ever went to was called Bon Boniere (established 1898) in Eureka, California, across the bay from Arcata where I attended Humboldt State University for my undergrad (1981-85). Indescribably rich and delicious. My Dad also thought it was the best he'd ever had and he'd been around since 1919...! The man visited more than a few old time ice cream parlors, that's for sure. Sadly, they closed their doors some years back.


              I recently bought a 2qt Cusinart ice cream maker. Very simple to use and clean but best of all it makes the best ice cream I ever had, and you can make anything that sounds good


              I scream, you scream, we all scream for . . . BBQ & PBR!!!
