I’m looking to buy a portable induction cooktop to use outside on my cooking center. I plan on storing it in my garage and bringing it out when needed.
Any suggestions on a model to get or any pros or cons with the one that you own.
What are you planning on cooking? I have an 1800 W unit that I don't use much because it lacks enough power to heat up a 5 qt CI Dutch oven full of oil for frying.
Wow. Surprising 1800W won't cut it. You won't get much higher than that in a plug-in 120V appliance, due to the amperage rating limits on AC power cords.
ssandy_561 - I bought it to move frying outside and that's why I'm not happy with it.
jfmorris - I was also surprised that it wouldn't work for frying. I searched for one with a higher wattage and found that I would need 220V and the price went way up.
I have two different models of the Nuwave cooktop. Both of them were gifts, and one of them I'm glad I got. The good one has been in use for over five years and just simply does want its supposed to do. The other one was a recent gift, and seem to have trouble with even heating on my 10" steel pan.
Wirecutter rates this one as the best, but I have never seen or used it
Great job. My oven/range went out a couple of years ago. I bought a cheap one from Costco, I believe. It was good enough to get me through the couple of weeks I needed it.
ssandy_561 IF you do get one, just be aware that if it is 1800W or more, you will either need an AC outlet adjacent to it, or a SUPER beefy extension cord to carry enough current. A little 16 gauge cord won't do the trick.
I have the Duxtop not the model highly rated by Wirecutter in willxfmr post, not sure if mine is a newer or older model but I am quite happy with it. I use it for deep frying using a CI dutch oven and it does the job for me.
for frying perhaps a propane burner. I just watch Meat Church deep fry chicken on one in his outdoor kitchen. Used a cast Iron Dutch Oven heated to 325df. Appears to work just fine on youtube.
I've got multiple outdoor propane powered cookers. It's amazing what a 60K or 105K BTU burner can do, compared to the 10-12K BTU burner on your stove in the kitchen...
