How about an adjustable base? So the coals can be raised closer to the grate.

OK here is a pic that shows what the bottom plate looks like, BUT, ignore the screws. This is a prototype. The final version has clips that do not require holes to be drilled into the SnS. As you can see the "grate" portion will work great for small pieces of lump charcoal and the stabilizing piece that extends under the water reservoir will allow you to easily slide the SnS around without worrying about it tipping over.
I should add that the stabilizing piece is NOT connected to the water reservoir. This prevents the grate from conducting additional heat to the water in the water reservoir, which would cause it to boil more quickly than the standard SnS. The boil rate is perfect and I did not want the grate to mess with perfection.
