Just wondering if the probes on thermometers mounted in the dome or hood of the grill need to be cleaned to keep them reading accurately? If so, how often and what is the best way? I noticed some buildup on the one on my BGE when I replaced it with one for my Fireboard.

Those bimetal thermos are famous for being inaccurate and I only use mine as a quick guide to tell me if I'm in the ballpark. If ya want to clean it, try one of those green scouring pads dipped in soapy water. Then wipe with a damp paper towel.

Yes, keep them clean. As Ron has stated, they are famous for being inaccurate, but they still can give you a ballpark. Those mounted probes are even more important in smokers like pellet smokers where they are feeding information into the controller.
