I just picked up a charcoal grill from a buddy of mine but there is no temperature gauge on the lid of the grill. I want to get an idea of how hot my charcoal grill is running so I assume I'll need some sort of gun that reads surface temp.
Not looking for anything too expensive but looking for some advice on guns to check out.
> Weber Genesis EP-330
> Grilla Grills Original Grilla (OG) pellet smoker with Alpha/Connect
> Pit Barrel Cooker (gone to a new home)
> WeberQ 2000 (on "loan" to a relative (I'll never see it again))
> Old Smokey Electric (for chickens mostly - when it's too nasty out
to fiddle with a more capable cooker)
> Luhr Jensen Little Chief Electric - Top Loader circa 1990 (smoked fish & jerky)

If you point an IR gun into a charcoal grill, all you’re going to read is the burning charcoal. As suggested, get something with a probe and a clip to support it about an inch above the grate.
I guess no real budget. Not sure how much these thermometers cost. $50? $100? Suggestions of what to get?
I do own a FireBoard but I don’t think I want to hook it up each time I use the charcoal grill. I would rather have a thermometer that essentially lives in the charcoal grill.
Cookers:
Weber Kettle (used/fair condition; a gift).
Grilla OG.
Pit Boss 3-Burner Ultimate Lift-Off Griddle.
SnS Kettle.
Everything Else:
Sous Vide equipment.
Instant read and leave-in thermometers.
Grill Grates.
Kingsford Blue Bag, Royal Oak Lump Charcoal, Weber lighter cubes, Weber charcoal chimneys.
BBQr's Delight Hickory & Apple flavor pellets, propane torch, 6" smoke tube.
Grilla apple & hickory pellets, Royal Oak charcoal pellets.
Rubs with salt: Meat Church, Meathead.
Rubs without salt: SnS Grills Rocky's Rub and Not Just for Beef.
Rubs home-mixed: None at this time.
Spices: Lots of 'em.
You have many options. The Thermoworks Chef Alarm that I use runs about $60. It uses a probe. Single channel. I have 2, 1 for oven, 1 for checking meat IT. Good luck...
Yeah, you’ll want ambient temperature, not surface temperature of the grate itself. They’ve given you some great thermometer options above. I’m preferable to Thermoworks.
Getting an infrared gun in the future? thermoworks also have IR guns too!
