Maverick XR 50 temps jump around

    Hello,
I purchased a XR-50 recently. I have used it for 2 cooks and noticed the pit temperature seems to jump around. I have used it with my PBC and on a long cook on my gas grill, so I’m starting to question if these temperature readings are correct.

Also, I tested the food temps in icey water and found the temp readings to be up to 4 degrees high versus readings I took with my Thermopen MK4.

I just wondered if anyone else has had issues like this. FWIW, I emailed the company last week and have gotten no response.

By "jump around", what do you mean? It's not abnormal for those type of probes to be 2-3 degrees off. 4, well, kind of on the high side of the acceptable variance but not unheard of.

Did you email ABCbarbecue or Maverick?

I mean the displayed temp is not steady. It goes up and down. There wasn't much if any wind for either cook. Especially on a gas grill, if I'm not touching anything I would expect the temp to be pretty steady.

Anyway, as I said I emailed them and its crickets

Cooker temps will almost always bob up & down, this is probably normal especially on a gasser. Rock solid cook temp is the unicorn of most grills & smokers. But it depends on how much back & forth you had. 10-50 deg swings, I consider that fairly normal. 100 degrees, not so much. My suspicion is it's simply your grill, not the device. Gas grills are un-insulated and prone to wide swings. Theyr'e not designed to hold steady temps, since that's not their typical intended use.

Hey GrillinNC sorry we didn't get back to you. We're pretty slammed this time of year. A 4 F difference may or may not be an issue. Ice baths can be tricky sometimes. Give us a call tomorrow at 704-425-1023, or email us again, and we'll be sure to take care of you!

I’m sure Dave will help make sense of your concerns ABC barbque and Maverick have been great in customer service

First run with mine, cooking chuckies, I removed it after 3 hrs because temps were so stable that I felt it was unnecessary. In a gmg Daniel Boone if it matters

I got one last night. I think New Year's Eve I am smoking a shoulder and will report how it goes. My trusty ET 733 has been great.
