As a radio geek with a FCC license and stuff.....
it is all very technical. Your effective range is a function of:
1. Frequency
2. Antenna gain (transmitting and receive)
3. Antenna height (transmitting and receive)
4. Power output (TX and RX)
here is what that means:
higher frequency means faster data rate, but less range and barrier penetration (that's why your 1980s TV didn't care about rain, but satellite TV does) antenna Gain, more is better (mostly, there are exceptions) , height = might, more power is better than less power.
It is impossible to say what RF range you will get. But to maximize RF range keep the transmitting and receiving units as high as possible, and keep as few barriers between the transmitter and receiver as possible.

Depending on the frequency the device uses, metal studs in your wall could block RF. So could wood studs. Or drywall. Also you could have stuff in your house generating RF interference. Like floursent lights. Or LED lights. Or your wifi internet router. Or the microwave. Or the refrigerator.
Seriously, there is value in living 1/2 mile from anyone else, killing the power to your house, then running ONE device directly from a battery.
If the interference is from a neighbor.....good luck.

Again, hard to say exactly what it is. CFL
and some (most?) LED lights are RF splatterboxes. This mostly affects frequencies (ironically called "high frequency") below 30 MHz, but has been reported on VHF (above 30 MHz but below 300 mhz) as well. Electric motors are another common source of RF hash. Tracking it down involves using a "field strength meter" or receiver with the antenna removed and then seeing what object you are closest to when the interference signal peaks. Then shut it off. Then look for the next thing.
Or it could be something as simple as weak batteries. Often the "never heard of this brand before" batteries stuff comes with are garbage. They work, just not great. Sort of like the cartridges that come with printers that are only 1/3 filled.
But if the batteries are fresh and good, it could be that your range is only 250 feet. For whatever reason. Still better than a wired device with a range of how long the probe cord is.
